As usual, Y/n was on a different type of timing with her recovery.

Tanjiro was still out like a light but Inosuke and Zenitsu were up and kicking! Y/n had visited as often as she could between missions, all of which she was accompanied by a worried Sanemi, talking with the comatose Tanjiro.

Y/n had gotten much more comfortable with leaving her mask off and eventually started leaving it with Tanjiro, hoping that it'd somehow bring him comfort like it brought comfort to her.

Today was one of those days, y/n sitting at his bedside while rambling about her most recent adventures.

"Shiori convinced me to go talk to my brother but as soon as I got near, I just froze up and got scared!" y/n laughed, rubbing the back of her neck, "Hah... I ran off as soon as he spoke. I hope he isn't upset..."

Silence.

Y/n observed the unconscious Tanjiro for a moment before sighing heavily, "I really wish you were awake. Zenitsu and Inosuke are really worried y'know."

The young demon slayer suddenly felt very tired as she recalled how often she had to keep Inosuke busy before Zenitsu could find a rock hard enough to knock him out with.

Nezuko had been quite worried as well so y/n's free evenings were often spent making up bedtime stories to share with the adorable demon girl.

"Just wake up soon, okay? You're really scaring me right now." she sighed then stood, "...bye, I guess."

She strolled towards the door then paused. Shiori had told her about seeing another cat, one that disappeared after getting blood from the two Upper Moons.

After some snooping, Shiori was able to confirm that the cat was technically an ally.

"If it's Muzan's blood that you need in order to turn Nezuko human again, I'll get it." y/n said in a hushed tone, "Something tells me that I'll be able to do so soon. Very soon."

In recent days, y/n had been visiting the Insect Hashira a lot more and yapping for more than thirty seconds. Shinobu was surprised but delighted nonetheless, always welcoming whenever y/n stopped by. Kanao, Aoi, Sumi, Naho and Kiyo were all happy whenever she was there, so that was a bonus!

Shinobu had always wondered what y/n was truly like. She already knew that her nervous and awkward demeanor was a result of whatever had happened before she'd become Sanemi's tsuguko.

But her true self would shine through occasionally.

Like when she teased Shinobu about her height, pat the Insect Hashira on the head or found ways to get the usually composed young woman flustered.

It wasn't often that the hidden side of y/n would come out but today was one of those days. But... the usually loud Shiori was oddly quiet. Something wasn't right.

Shinobu's worry only increased when y/n had asked, "Please take care of Shiori for me."

"Take care of Shiori? Why?" Shinobu asked with a small frown, "Don't you usually take her with you on missions?"

"Ah, yes, but this isn't a mission." y/n replied with a smile, "It's something personal. Don't worry, Shinazugawa-san is willing to take care of her if you don't want to. I'm only asking because I trust you but if she's too much, you can give her to him."

"...y/n?" Shinobu questioned, "Is there something wrong? You're talking as if you're never coming back."

For a second, Shinobu could've sworn that y/n's smile faltered. It did, she was sure of it. But the young lady took a deep breath and a look of determination settled on her face.

"No, everything's fine. I'll be back soon, I'm sure of it!" y/n exclaimed with a grin, "You won't have to deal with Shiori for long!"

Shinobu let out a soft sigh, "Hah... that's not what I'm worried about, y/n."

The h/c haired demon slayer passed the cat over to Shinobu and said her goodbyes before hurrying away.

She'd taken her mask with her as well, retrieving it from the spot she'd left it in beside Tanjiro's bed.

Y/n was gone by the time night fell and Shiori refused to answer Shinobu's questions. The cat clearly knew something but she wasn't going to talk. Shiori ain't no damn snitch. Mostly.

Shiori had promised not to speak.

She promised not to say anything.

But Aoi managed to get a few words out of the cat.

"She's just gonna go look for someone, that's all." Shiori had mumbled, "Their agreed meeting spot is a two day trip away so she'll be gone for a while."

Shinobu's worries were not entirely gone but she wasn't as frantic as she was when y/n first left.

Y/n would be fine.

Right?

Forest was wrecked. Any wildlife that had once been present in the surrounding area of the two swordsmen when the evening began had either fled or perished.

One of the two swordsmen was tossing aside her sword's scabbard so it wouldn't slow her down. Her mask was laying a distance away, all of it wooden mask having been destroyed except for the lower half.

Despite her current situation, y/n still gripped her purple blade as she grinned at the demon who stood across from her. Had it not been for her knowledge of her opponent's fighting style, she would've been cut up along with the trees and unfortunate animals behind her. Poor fluffies :(

"Y'know, if you were human, I would've won by now." she commented, pointing towards the other swordsman's missing hand as he stared at it in silence, "It's difficult for someone to fight when he's missing a hand. Even someone as skilled as you."

The opponent was quiet for a moment before he chuckled with a, "You're not wrong... you've certainly improved."

Long black hair, six eyes, he was the same as y/n remembered. Perhaps a bit more overwhelming when it came to his presence but the intense aura only made y/n grin.

In an instant, Kokushibo's missing hand was back and he looked back towards y/n, "Let's get serious, shall we? I've yet to see how much you've truly grown."

Y/n nodded, her blood rushing like a damn tsunami, "No objections here."

Upper Moon One. Kokushibo. His eyes used to creep y/n out a little when she was younger and she certainly wasn't afraid to make it known.

She was pretty sure she hurt his feelings once.

Believe it or not. The very demon who stood in front of her now was the same one who had helped her become the skilled demon slayer she was now.

The one who made her eat even when she wanted nothing more than to starve to death.

The one who made her train from dusk till dawn.

The one who tried his best to still let her enjoy her childhood, even if it meant having his hair braided or pretending to be a woman in need of saving.
Here's a fact, he wasn't a very good actor.

Y/n had told him something. When they first met all those years ago. When that teary eyed little girl pointed up at him and demanded that he get out of her way so that she could buy soba on her own.

"I'll get super strong one day! So strong that stupid demons like you won't stop me from eating soba with Papa, Mama and my little brothers!"

She'd certainly gotten stronger, Kokushibo knew that one for sure. He could tell just from looking at her.

Now it was time to see just how much she'd grown.
Exactly how strong she was now.

Most would be fearful in the face of Upper Moon One. Their body would refuse to let them fight.

But y/n? She was just excited.

The threat of death was there, yes, but the young demon slayer hardly paid it any mind.

I mean-

It'd been a while since she'd last seen her teacher.
