53: 𝐼𝑡'𝑠 𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝑓𝑎𝑖𝑟
A/N: The update is a little later in the day because I woke up with over a hundred notifications?!?! So obviously I spent like an hour scrolling through and reading EVERY comment because that's my favorite thing to do EVER...
So anyways here's a chapter 🫶

They stayed until fairly late. It didn't take long at all for everyone to become comfortable around the others. As the hours went on Kirishima noticed that Bakugou didn't yell as much. Instead of screaming he spoke calmly and rationally.
The last time Kirishima spoke to Bakugou while he was so calm was at the USJ attack. When Bakugou explained how they shouldn't bother helping their classmates with low-class villains and should instead take out the Villains method of transportation.
Bakugou spoke the same way now, Kira did the brunt of their research on her computer while Bakugou looked through the books they had brought and Kirishima started the wording of their paper's first draft. Bakugou would randomly calmly correct something. Whether it was just him taking the paper and writing arrows over the page in his red pen, directing where Kirishima should re-word things or rearrange paragraphs. Or even telling Kira what websites were bogus and which ones weren't.
Halfway through their time together Bakugou was comfortable enough to reveal something to Kirishima that he had no idea about.
Bakugou used reading glasses.
He randomly pulled them out of his bag without saying anything, and just put them on before reading again. Neither of the other two students said a single word about it. They just continued reading about Crimson Riot.
"Huh..." Kirishima thought, looking down at his paper. His hand stalling. "Didn't Midoriya say... That Bakugou picked on kids with glasses... And Him for being quirkless?"
He remembered what Midoriya had told his group about Bakugou. When he was "warning" them about his behavior.
Kirishima looked up. "But he wears glasses... And his best friend..." He looked at Kira.
"Is quirkless."

Kira's head was propped on her hand, she scrolled through a few different articles on Riot's teenage years. Then Bakugou's phone started to buzz, he glanced over at it. Seeing A few texts. He cursed under his breath and reached for his iPhone. His phone had a plain black case with orange highlights around the buttons and cameras.
It also had an incredibly broken screen.
But on the cracked screen you could see three texts from the contact "old hag." Which was his mother. He texted back a few times and then rolled his eyes. "My mom wants me home." He grumbled, taking off his glasses.
"Huh? What time is it?" Kirishima asked. Looking up from his book.
"Seven." Kira said, looking up from her laptop.
"Oh really?" Kirishima asked with a chuckle. "Wow, in that case I should probably head out too." He said.
Kira nodded at the two. Bakugou reached into his lap and handed Miso over to Kira. Apparently He had been subtly cuddling the creature for about half an hour. The kitten had wondered onto his lap and started attacking his pinkie finger. Before deciding to lick it instead.
Kirishima watched as the boy handed the cat over. He was being so incredibly gentle with it. Everything that Bakugou had done today had been "out of character" or rather just unexpected.
He cooked them a meal.
He spoke clearly and calmly.
He was helpful and actually... Polite.
Kirishima honestly had never felt so shitty. He had really underestimated him, Bakugou was definitely a stand up guy. It was just... In certain environments. He only seemed to be angry or loud or obnoxious when he was around other people. Kirishima almost thought it was some sort of defense mechanism. Like when he was uncomfortable, he'd just lash out.
But when he was here, in his best friend's house. Studying. He seemed comfortable, at home.
The boys packed up their things and eventually walked to the door of the apartment. Kirishima slipped his Crocs on and Bakugou scoffed lightly at them. But Kirishima just chuckled.
Kira held Miso and moved the cats paw like it was waving goodbye at them. She had been different too. Not nearly as different as Bakugou. But she was a little more... Silly. Sure she was obviously humorous, but usually she was either being sarcastic in class or cracking jokes specifically to Bakugou. But now, Kirishima was included in it.
But the moment they shut the door there was a new awkwardness. Him and Bakugou were alone, unoccupied. Sure it was easy to get along and socialize while doing a set task. With Kira to break the ic for them. But now they were just... Alone.
They walked down the stairs and out of the apartment complex without a word spoken. Kirishima was about to say goodbye as he turned to walk down the street but... Bakugou turned too and they walked side by side down the street as the sun started to set.
Kirishima looked over at Bakugou. Then down at the ground, then up at the sky. The words he wanted to say stuck on his tongue.
"Just spit it out already." Bakugou said, glaring at him. It wasn't a mean glare though, he was just... Squinting at him.
"H-huh?" Kirishima asked, blinking rapidly.
"You obviously want to say something. So what is it?" Bakugou asked, his guts twisted. He had been on his best behavior that night, had he still somehow messed up? Had he still somehow offended him or something? Did he not want to be in his group?
"Listen man." Kirishima said, rubbing the back of his neck. "I'm sorry."
"For what?" Bakugou asked with a small frown, clearly uneasy.
"I just... I just really misjudged you." Kirishima said. "I just... Believed everything I heard about you and, and I didn't bother to even talk to you about it."
Bakugou stared at him. Mouth slightly open in shock. He hadn't really expected that. "What... It's... It's whatever." Bakugou finally said, looking away and snapping his mouth shut.
"No it's not. I should have at least given you a chance to defend yourself." Kirishima shook his head. "We all did it and it wasn't fair." Kirishima glanced up.
"But I can't." Bakugou said, clinching his jaw.
"Huh?" Kirishima asked, looking at the boy in confusion.
"I can't defend myself. Everything he says is true... At least some of it." Bakugou shook his head. "I've done and said some pretty shitty things. But so has he, he's just way better at... Telling people about it."
Kirishima waited before saying anything.
"You can try." The guy said. "I'm a pretty good listener, and frankly I just... I really want to know. It's been bugging me for weeks. Midoriya just seems so... Fake."
"He is." Bakugou said, leaning his head back and rubbing his eyes. They were sore from reading for too long without his glasses. He hated that he needed something to do a task as simple as read. Sure he could read, but doing it too long strained his eyes too much.
"We used to be friends. In fact I think I was his only friend, the kids in our class didn't like him very much because... Well everyone thought he was quirkless."
Kirishima looked at his hands and listened intently. Compared to Midoriya, Bakugou already sounded more genuine. Like this was actually difficult to say. Not like Midoriya, Midoriya just spoke about it easily. Like word vomit, then he'd pretend like it was an accident.
"But something changed. I said something really fucking shitty that I shouldn't have. Infront of everyone, I humiliated him." Bakugou admitted. He ran a hand through his hair, his other one flexed. Very, very small explosions rippled over his palms.
Kirishima understood what he was doing because he did it himself. Kirishima would harden and unharden small sections of his skin, it calmed him down. Stimulating himself. Like someone tapping their foot or biting their nails.
"I regret it. I hate myself for it." He said, he seemed genuinely saddened. "I lost a friend, and apparently gained an enemy. Deku after that... He changed. I understand that I hurt him, but he's repaid the favor tenfold. He's done everything he could to keep..."
"To keep you alone." Kirishima finished.
"Seems like it." Bakugou nodded stiffly. "Anytime anyone every tried to talk to me he'd tell these horrible stories. The worst part is some of them were true, at least half way. He has a way of making everything more dramatic than it really was. Sure maybe I snapped at him a few times. But it was only because he pushed me until I couldn't hold back anymore. Pushing my buttons anyway possible while looking so stupidly innocent. Making snide comments about my family or my... Issues."
He stopped, not wanting to go into the fact of his medications and other mental problems. But Kirishima understood what he meant.
"He'd do anything he could to get a reaction from me. And I'd give it to him, I just can't control myself and I hate it." Bakugou shoved his hands deep in his pockets. The explosions had started to get a little too big.
"Then that would just give him even more ammo. Especially when it happened around other people. So all throughout middle school I was just... Isolated."
"That sucks man." Kirishima whispered. "And He's doing the same thing at UA."
"I thought going to UA would finally rid me of him. But he... He just showed up, with a fucking awesome quirk. It just... IT JUST PISSES ME OFF!!" Bakugou snapped, rubbing his eyes. "I CAN'T EVEN HAVE MY DREAM SCHOOL!!! I've been wanting to go to UA since I first heard about it! I've been training my WHOLE life to get in!! I thought it was the ONE THING he couldn't ruin for me! And then he just... He just MIRACULOUSLY DEVELOPS A QURIK?!"
Kirishima tensed up and bit his lip. Because he could see just how upset Bakugou was right now. He gripped the fabric of his shirt and watched Bakugou as he frantically rubbed his eyes. He was being so open to him. All it took was someone giving him a chance.
All it took was one night hanging out with him and an offer to listen.
"I trained all my life... And he's somehow just as good as I am? IN LESS THAN A YEAR?!" He asked. "It's not fair! How is he better than me?!"
"He's not... He's not better." Kirishima said, putting a hand on Bakugou's shoulder. "You're top of the class! You and Todoroki are without a doubt the strongest in the class. I mean you've seen what his quirk does to his body."
"It won't last. He'll evolve, change. Get better. He's already changing his fighting style, he hasn't broken a bone in weeks." Bakugou shook his head. "He's like a demon. My demon. Like his purpose is to just drive me nuts." Bakugou said in frustration, holding his hands out and curling in his fingers. Like he was strangling someone that wasn't actually there.
"And I just blindly listened to him." Kirishima whispered, guilt bubbling up in his chest.
"Well he's right. I AM an asshole." Bakugou said. Throwing his arms up in defeat. "And I don't do I great job at hiding it."
"I think it's the opposite actually." Kirishima said with a smile
Bakugou frowned at him. "What does that mean?"
"I think you're a good person. But you hide it... By acting like an asshole." Kirishima said, Bakugou stared for a second. And the then laughed.
"You're fucking crazy." He said shaking his head. "You and Kira both. You two are insane if you think shit like that."
"Nah man! I'm serious!" Kirishima said with a grin. "You cooked food for us, you're nice to Kira, everyone can see how much you care about her! You're a good student and a great friend."
"So what?" Bakugou wrinkled up his nose. "You can do all that and still be an ass."
"But you care." Kirishima pointed out. "Real assholes don't care if they're assholes."
"WHO THE FUCK SAID I CARED HUH?". Bakugou said. Shoving his hands back into his pockets. "You're a moron, you know that shitty hair?"
"I've been told." Kirishima said with a playful smile. "Hey thanks for being honest with me. I know that might have been hard."
"Shut up." Bakugou grumbled. "Just don't go around telling people."
"Of course not-"
"I mean it. Any of it, what I said stays in-between the two of us. Even if you feel like it'll make people like me more. Not. A. Word." Bakugou said, he sounded stern but he looked anxious. "I haven't even really talked to Kira about all of this." He mumbled. "But she seems to just know already."
"Okay. I promise." Kirishima nodded.
Bakugou nodded and jerked his head to the side. "I'm headed this way." He said, taking a few steps in the opposite direction. Away from where Kirishima was headed.
"Okay, I'll see around man." Kirishima smiled. "I really am sorry about everything."
"Yeah I know you are." Bakugou said. Kirishima turned. "Hey shitty hair?"
Kirishima looked over his shoulder.
"Not a word about my glasses either. Or I'll fucking kill you!" Bakugou snapped. Kirishima laughed.
"Of course not. But I think they look pretty manly on you, you should just embrace it." He said with a toothy grin. "They're cool."
"Don't be a nerd." Bakugou said back. "They suck."
And with that Bakugou stomped off, Kirishima smiled softly at the boy he had learned a LOT about tonight. He definitely hadn't expected to get so many questions answered in one night. But unfortunately he had forgotten about one.
"Dang it! I forgot to ask if they were dating!"
A/N: So um... Looks like they finally got their moment!!!
But hmm... I wonder what Bakugou did to make Midoriya so mad at him to begin with...🤔
Also Bakugou with glasses>>>
