29: 𝙱𝚘𝚢𝚏𝚛𝚒𝚎𝚗𝚍𝚜
Nova wasn't sick.
But UA didn't need to know that. She woke up that morning feeling sick. Sick with anxiety over the idea of stepping into that classroom again, while everyone around her thought the horrible events of the USJ were her fault.
So she called in. As far as UA knows, she was running a fever and therefore had to stay home.
She walked from her home to Zoey's school. Ready to pick her up as normal, although she knew she'd be hit with many questions when she did.
"Where's your uniform?" Zoey asked after hugging Nova happily. The girl tilted her head. "Is UA school still cancelled?"
"Um... Yeah something like that..." Nova mumbled, looking away. She sometimes found it hard to lie to Zoey. With those blue eyes staring into her very soul.
Zoey stared and then gasped. "Nova! Did you skip?!"
"Don't tell Miss Karon okay?" Nova whispered. "I called in sick."
"But you're not sick!" Zoey tugged on Nova's arm.
"I know..." Nova sighed. "It's complicated okay?"
"Are you scared of villains?" Zoey looked up at her with curious blue eyes.
"Kinda." Nova looked away. No, she wasn't. She was scared of facing her class. Villains were the last thing on her mind.
"Can I skip school tomorrow?" Zoey asked.
"No you can't." Nova frowned. "I'm going tomorrow, so you are too."
"Awh, how come you get to have all the fun?" Zoey whined as They walked from the school.
"You have plenty of fun. How was your day at school anyways?" Nova asked, hoping to change subjects. It worked and soon Zoey was babbling on about her friends and teachers.
"I met these two boys and guess what? They're TWINS!!! Which means there's two of them but they look the same! Do you ever wish you had a twin?" Zoey asked.
"Not really." Nova shrugged. Although suddenly the idea seemed... Kinda nice.
A twin would imply her sibling was a Kurayami too... Having a sibling that understood her and was there for her did sound... Nice.
Nova loved Zoey. But the little girl wouldn't ever understand what Nova went through because of her name or her father. And Nova was okay with that, she didn't want to expose Zoey to things like that.
"I kinda do. It seems fun." Zoey smiled. "But guess what? My friends told me that one of the twins have a crush on me!"
"Oh really?" Nova asked with an eyebrow raise. Zoey was just now getting to a time in her life where she was obsessed with boys and romance.
"Yep! Problem is... I can't remember which one..." Zoey sighed dramatically. "Maybe I should just date them both... Is two boyfriends too many?"
"Wayyyy too many." Nova frowned. "You're not allowed to have a boyfriend. You're too young."
"What?! Novaaa." Zoey whined. "Then When can I??"
"When you're.... Eighteen." Nova looked away, hiding her smile.
"...is that why you don't have a boyfriend?" Zoey asked, tugging her arm. "Because you're only fifteen?"
"Zoey!" Nova blushed at the sudden turn of tables. "Yes and... Well I don't want one."
Zoey blinked in confusion. "Why not?!"
"Because... They're..." Nova frowned, trying to think of an answer. "Useless."
Zoey giggled. "No they're not! Boyfriends do all sorts of stuff!" She argued. "My friend Mabel has a boyfriend and he carries her things and gives her snacks!"
"Fine, maybe they're not completely useless." Nova rolled her eyes. "But still... I don't want a boyfriend."
Nova looked away. She wasn't entirely sure herself if that was an honest answer. Nova rarely thought about romance, mainly because she didn't think many people would want to be partners with her. She could barely make FRIENDS. How was she supposed to date someone?
"Why not?!" Zoey gasped. "Ohhhh are you gay?"
Nova coughed and covered her face. "No Zoey!"
"It's okay if you are, my friend Mabel is." Zoey said with a straight face. Patting Nova's arm as though she was comforting her while trying to make her come out of the closet Nova wasn't in.
"I'm not- wait I thought you said Mabel had a boyfriend?!" Nova asked in confusion. "Nevermind! Just... No boyfriends okay?"
"Fiiine." Zoey whined. "What about Friends that are boys?"
"That's fine." Nova shook her head in exhaustion, ready for this conversation to be done. Besides, Nova's only friend was a boy. Who was she to tell Zoey no?
"Where are we going?" Zoey asked, realizing Nova had taken a different turn.
"I thought we could get some ice cream before going home." Nova shrugged and Zoey let out a gleeful gasp. "If! You promise not to tell Miss Karon I didn't go to school."
"Can we get cotton candy flavored!?" Zoey pulled on her clothes. Nova wrinkled up her nose.
"No, we can get strawberry." Nova countered. Knowing it was Zoey's SECOND favorite flavor. Nova only had enough money for one container, and she hated cotton candy.
"Okay!" Zoey chirped. Skipping behind her older sister.

"Ugh I'm so nervous for the sports festival." Mina whined, holding onto Jirou's arm. Uraraka following close behind as the girls walked together from school.
"I don't know man... I'm actually kinda pumped." Jirou twirled her aux cord casually.
"I'm gonna do my best!" Uraraka said in determination.
"Yeah we know you're excited Uraraka. No offense but you've been saying that since it was first announced." Mina giggled playfully. "Your quirk's really awesome though, I think you have a real shot at winning."
"You do?!" Uraraka lit up happily. "I hope I at least get scouted by a good pro!"
"Me too, that's all that really matters. I could do without winning and stuff..." Jirou stopped when she saw someone down the hill, crossing the street. "Woah wait..."
"Huh? What is it?" Uraraka followed her gaze.
"Nothing... I just thought I saw-"
"Is that Kurayami?" Mina whispered, even though they were ample distance away from the redhead.
"I thought she was sick?" Uraraka innocently tilted her head.
"She said she was sick." Mina whispered. "Do you think she skipped?!"
"Why would she skip?" Uraraka looked over at Jirou as she watched Nova disappear behind a building, following the streets to their right.
"I don't know..." Jirou mumbled.
"...wanna find out?" Mina whispered with a glint in her eye.
