A/N: it's my birthday 🤭

School was closed the day after the USJ attack. Nova was thankful for it.

If Karon knew what happened, she didn't say anything to Nova. Leaving for work about whatever she did afterwards without more than a grunt. Nova knew she likely wouldn't return until after dark.

She never did.

The words Zoey said last night echoed in Nova's mind.

"You're my real mom."

In their situation it was almost true. Nova did everything for Zoey. Nova packed her lunches, helped with homework, walked her too and from school. Nova raised Zoey.

What if something like that happened again? What if UA was attacked and... Nova got hurt? Or was even killed? What would happen to Zoey then?

Would Karon step up to be the guardian she was supposed to be? Nova knew she hadn't always been this way. An alcoholic, an addict. Or at least she had more control when she first gained custody of Nova.

If Nova was out of the picture, would she act as she should Towards her other foster child? Karon made it plain and clear that she favored Zoey.  Was she simply taking advantage of the fact that Nova was willing to be Zoey's parent?

Nova hadn't asked how things were for Zoey when she was staying at Junshi. But the little girl hadn't complained about being mistreated. But... That doesn't necessarily mean Karon hadn't neglected her.

Nova didn't know. And she didn't want to find out. Zoey was all the family Nova had. Even if she wasn't actually her sister biologically. Nova would do anything to keep her safe.

Even if that meant leaving UA... Before it got too dangerous.

"Will you... Adopt me?"

Nova cursed.

She couldn't leave UA though... Her only chance of getting a job good enough for her to EVER be seen as fit for adopting Zoey in the future was being a pro.

UA was the perfect opportunity for that.

The fantasy of Nova leaving Japan and traveling somewhere she wasn't known was slowly dissolving. Unless she could somehow bring Zoey with her.

She leaned back against the metal of the fire escape. Her cigarette burning out as she dropped it down to the street below. With the last two she smoked.

She also couldn't take care of Zoey if she died of lung cancer either.

She sighed and pulled herself up. It was almost time for her to go and pick her up from school anyways.

She couldn't be late again.

"We're totally big deals, those news channels loved us!" Denki said with a smirk.

The class was nothing if not optimistic. The school started back again after going on break for a single day. While the USJ was still all the students could think about.

"I know right, it's kinda crazy." Kirishima agreed.

"Get over yourselves. The hero course that pumps out pros was attacked, that's what they care about. Not us." Jirou frowned at Kaminari. The boy her and Momo had been fighting with during the attack. Though it seemed to have bonded them.

"Who knows what would have happened if the teachers hadn't shown up." Sero leaned on his own desk. Despite his fearful words he spoke with a carefree smile.

"Why'd you say that?!" Mineta whined, still panicked from the attack. "I'm gonna wet myself just thinking about it-"

"WOULD YOU SHUT UP??? GROW A PAIR LOSER!" Bakugou screamed at him.

"Wasn't it crazy watching All Might beat up that bird guy?! He was super strong!"

"Yes his strength was truly a thing of wonder."

The students continued to chat, sitting calmly in their seats. At least most of them. Quick steps ran up the hall.

"EVERYONE TAKE YOUR SEATS! HOMEROOM CLASS IS ABOUT TO BEGIN!" Tenya Iida ran in, immediately taking charge as he felt a class repersenitave should.

Even though it was all for nothing.

"Uh... You're the only one not sitting down?" Sero looked around the calm seated class. Earning a few giggled from the seated students.

Iida sat down in embarrassment, fists clinched. "Dang it..." He muttered.

"Don't sweat it." Uraraka giggled behind him.

The bell rang and Iida's gaze was pulled over to the seat next to him.

Empty.

Nova's seat was empty and class had officially started. He stared at it for several moments. Remembering the last time he saw her. Escorted away by that police officer.

"Kurayami is the only student here with a criminal record. It's protocol to investigate her for any connections first."

Was she... Arrested?

Iida knew it, he knew it all along. Kurayami was no good, the police must've found something out about her and...

And she was gone now. Out of his hair. He'd never have to see her sharp grey eyes or... Fluffy red hair again....

Good.

"Who do you think will be teaching since Mr Aizawa is injured?"

"I don't know... Last I heard he was still in the hospital."

Iida looked away from Nova's empty desk.

"Good morning students."

Everyone looked up at the familiar voice of Mr Aizawa. Covered in bandages.

"Mr Aizawa?!! What are you doing here?" Half the class asked in shock. The man was obviously still injured. Casts on both hands and bandages wrapped around his forehead.

"I'm glad you're... Okay?!"

"You call that okay?!"

"My well-being is irrelevant." Aizawa said, stepping up in front of the class. "I'm well enough to teach. Just please stay in line, I don't have the energy to deal with rowdy students." He said with a sigh.

He moved a few papers, only a few of his fingers seemed to be usable.

"And before any of your idiots say anything." He glanced up, eyes barely visible underneath the bandages. "Nova Kurayami called in sick. That's all. She'll be back in class tomorrow providing she feels well enough."

Iida froze. Looking back at her seat, any previous assumptions he made crumbled.

Nevermind. Nova wasn't expelled or arrested... He didn't know exactly how to feel, there was a bubbling in his gut that he couldn't identify.

"She spoke to a detective and was cleared of any guilt or involvement over what happened at the USJ." Aizawa said sternly. "So I will not hear any more bullshit about it. If I hear anyone accuse her of anything again there will be punishment for everyone involved. Whether that's too her or behind her back it will not be tolerated."

The class seemed nervous. He looked around with a hidden glare, although his students couldn't SEE his expression. They could imagine it. It stopped on Bakugou, who scoffed and looked away.

"Do you all understand?"

"Yes sir!" The class yelped.

"Bakugou?" Aizawa asked, when he noticed the boy in question said nothing. "Do you understand?"

"Yeah whatever." He mumbled, glaring out the window.

Their teacher sighed, dropping the issue for now. "In other news... Your fight isn't done yet."

The students stiffened in fear. Looking up at their teacher, waiting for a pop quiz or news of another villain attack.

"The UA sports festival is approaching."
