Training day.

You were standing under a giant tree, glaring up at it like it personally insulted your ancestors.

"Do I seriously have to climb that?" you groaned.

"Yes," Obanai said flatly, arms crossed, like the cold-blooded gym teacher he truly was.

"Can't I just... mentally imagine I climbed it?"

"No."

You sighed dramatically. "Fine. But if I die, haunt you is what I will."

With grumbling and some minor insults muttered under your breath, you started climbing the tree. You were almost halfway up when-

SNAP.

"AHHH-!"

Your foot slipped. Gravity did its thing.

You braced yourself to hit the ground-only you didn't.

Instead, you landed directly on something.

Or... someone.

"...Get. Off. Me," Obanai said stiffly, his voice muffled under you.

You slowly looked down and realized-

"Oh... my... GOD. I fell on you?" you gasped, eyes wide.

He turned his head slightly, face red despite his deadpan expression. "Obviously."

"I'm so sorry-wait actually, no. You shouldn't have been standing there! My fall radius is clearly dangerous."

"...You scream louder than a crow."

You rolled off him and stood up, brushing off your clothes.

"Let's never talk about this again," you said.

"Gladly."

But the way he quickly looked away-still a little red in the face-said otherwise.

You smirked. "Unless... did you like it?"

"I will bury you under this tree."

"Love you too, pookie number two."

He didn't respond.

Kaburamaru, who had been peacefully wrapped around his neck, hissed and slithered up your arm in panic.

"OH MY GOD-KABURAMARU??"

He stared at you with his little snake eyes, head tilted like he was judging your entire existence.

"Aww... don't look at me like that, it was gravity's fault! "

You rolled away with Kaburamaru still on you.

"Your snake likes me more now."

"He's probably trying to strangle you."

You gasped. "He would never. Isn't that right, Kaburamaru?"
The snake flicked his tongue at you, then calmly curled around your wrist like a bracelet.

"See? Besties."

Obanai muttered something under his breath. He was definitely not jealous. Probably.

Time skip later that day

After hours of tree climbing, balancing, and dodging flying slippers (Obanai's idea of agility training), you collapsed on the ground.

"I hate you."

"I hate you too," he replied casually, though his voice was softer than usual.

The week passed like that training, arguing, and the occasional accidental soft moment.

But now... only two days remained until the Mugen Train mission.

Today was your last day at Obanai's estate. You were heading back to Shinobu's to prepare, both mentally and physically.

You stood at the door with your packed bag.

"Bye, pookie number 2," you teased with a wink.

Obanai looked away. "Bye, I guess..."

Was he... sad?

You didn't press it. You had to go.

You began walking back toward the Butterfly Mansion, stretching your arms as you walked.

On your way there, you practiced some breathing techniques Yoriichi had drilled into you in your dreams.

You did a few flips off tree roots for fun, then sprinted uphill to build endurance.

You stopped at a small stream to splash water on your face and do a few quick squats before continuing.

You even tried a few sword strikes at leaves blowing in the wind - only hit one out of five, but hey, progress!

When you arrived at the mansion, you were sweaty, tired, but a little proud.

"I'm back, bitches!" you announced.

Aoi gave you a disapproving look.

"I mean... hi," you corrected.

Now it was time to shower, eat, rest... and prepare for the mission ahead.

Only two days left.
