"Having a bad day?" Obanai asked, his voice calm but with that usual sharp edge.
You smirked, nudging him lightly. "Yeah, Sanemi still refuses to forgive his freaking brotha. Can you believe that?"
Obanai's dark eyes narrowed just a bit. "That's... unfortunate."
You rolled your eyes. "Yeah, well, maybe I'll think of something else to fix it. I'm full of surprises."
He gave a slight nod, not saying much more. "Dinner is ready. Don't keep it waiting."
You grinned, planting a quick kiss on his cheek. "Thanks, lovely pookie."
Later, lying on your bed, you groaned softly.
"Ugh... I'm not feeling well..."
Yoriichi's calm voice came from nearby. "Is something wrong, dear?"
You rubbed your temples. "Yeah... I think I'm gonna be sick. My head hurts so bad."
"That's bad news," Yoriichi said softly.
You sighed. "Maybe after some sleep, tomorrow will be better."
"That's a good idea."
You pulled out your phone. "But first... I'm gonna watch some TikTok and Floptoks."
Obanai appeared by the door, arms crossed, watching silently. Then, with his usual cool tone, he said, "Don't let those distractions keep you up too late."
You gave him a cheeky smile. "No promises, Obanai."
He just shook his head, eyes softening just a little before he left the room.
The room was dark, lit only by the moonlight pouring through the window. You were laying on your side, arm draped lazily over your pillow, blinking at nothing.
You sighed. "Can't sleep."
"I noticed," Yoriichi's voice hummed gently in your mind. Deep. Calm. Comforting.
You smiled softly. "You always lurking in my brain?"
"Only when you allow me."
A pause.
Then he added, quieter this time, "Though I must admit... I find comfort in your thoughts."
Your heart fluttered a little. "You're too smooth for someone who's like... ancient."
"I'm not sure whether to be offended or flattered."
You smirked at the ceiling. "Both."
There was silence again. But it wasn't awkward. Just heavy with something unspoken.
"Yoriichi?"
"Yes?"
"...If I never ended up here... you think we still would've met somehow?"
A long pause.
"I do," he finally said. "Even across lifetimes. Even if you forgot me. I believe... I would always find my way back to you."
Your breath hitched. "You're so-ugh!-poetic. Stop that!"
He chuckled low in your mind, and for the first time, it wasn't distant-it felt close. Like he was sitting right next to you.
"You make it easy," he said, voice suddenly soft and laced with emotion. "To feel again."
Your cheeks burned.
"Damn... you really got me kicking my feet right now."
"I don't see your feet moving."
"IT'S A FIGURE OF SPEECH."
He was silent for a second, then:
"Would it be inappropriate... to say I wish I could hold you?"
Your eyes widened, your voice catching in your throat.
"...No. Not inappropriate."
"Then, if I could, I would hold you until you fell asleep. And stay. For as long as you'd let me."
Your heartbeat thumped so loud you were sure he could hear it in your soul.
"...Then stay, Yoriichi."
A quiet breath of a smile filled your mind.
"Always."
