Hanako POV:

I slid off the windowsille.

"How do you know all that?" I narrowed my eyes at the girl, looking at her properly now. Nothing in her sparked my recognisition. "Are you an apparition?"

"No!" the girl gasped. "I'm not, I swear. I'm Yashiro, please believe me, I can prove it, ask me any question. Test me. Do whatever you like."

"Fine then." An idea sparked in my head. I grinned. "Let's go take a look at your book."

"My... book?"

"Tsuchigomori's book." I shrugged. "You'd know if you were really Yashiro."

"Oh! That book." she smiled grimly. "It'll show you I'm not lying, trust me."

"Then let's go. Nothing more to be said."

Later

Author POV:

The 4 O'clock library was just as Nene remembered. 

The dark lined bookshelves, the eerily colour-coded books. 

"Here's your book." Hanako floated up, took it out of the shelf, the white book with the red divider. 

Nene stared at the book. She remembered how she'd held it before, the pages holding the truth of her past and future. 

Hanako opened the book, flipping to the last few pages before the red divider. Her past. 

Nene peeked over his shoulder, reading the pages. 

Nene Yashiro, 2023 November 14th to December 7th

- Begun dating Koboyashi Kai

- Broke up with Kai, left household

-Made deal with dangerous apparition on the streets; traded hair pernamently in order to remove Hanako's memories

-Memory wipe failed

- By unfamilair green-haired girl, a shapeshifting potion was spilled on Yashiro Nene by herself

- Yashiro Nene living as somebody else ever since

- Yashiro Nene curren-

Nene stared at the book, fascinated as more words began forming. It updated by itself, the ink spilling onto the crisp white paper. 

Hanako stared at the book. 

Hanako POV:

Begun dating Koboyashi Kai.

Who was he? God, seeing his name written there, it made it all real somehow. It felt... real. 

Unlike me.

I scanned the rest of the page. I looked back at the red-haired girl standing behind me, looking both so frightened and hopeful. So she really was Yashiro. She hadn't been lying. 

"So." I carefully put Yashiro's book back into the bookshelf. "Hello, Yashiro."

"Hanako-kun..." her voice trembled. 

"Are you sorry?" I didn't turn around to face her. "Are you sorry? Sorry for being a hypocrite? Sorry for ruining everything I had with Renee? Sorry for doing everything you've done to me? Sorry that we both made mistakes?!"

She remained silent.

Nene POV:

I'd forgotten how dangerously accurate and yet so vital that book was. I'd forgotten how everything I'd done wasn't nothing, wasn't so easily forgiven, and I knew I had had no right to be angry at Hanako before for cheating on me when I was doing the exact same thing. When nothing was confirmed, nothing was right. 

"Hanako-kun... I've stopped it. I stopped it soon as... soon as I found out about you and Renee. I left him to come back here." my fingers were shaking. "Please believe me, Hanako-kun, I never wanted... I realised I made a mistake. I was angry and lonely and..."

"Lonely!" he scoffed, his voice bitter. I recoiled. I'd never seen him like this before. "Lonely! You haven't been lonely. What you think is lonely is nothing like what it really is. It's no-one seeing you, no-one hearing you, no-one but yourself, the one person you just want to kill. The one person you hate with all your heart. The one person who can never stop existing and can never stop being a constant reminder of everything you've done and haven't done."

He's right. I don't understand. 

"I just wanted to fix things." I swiped at the tears in my eyes. "Hanako-kun, I never wanted to... I never wanted to hurt you. I just wanted to fix everything I'd done, everything I regret."

"You don't understand," his eyes were blazing as he finally turned to face me. There was something in his face that I hadn't ever seen before. "You never will. Guess what, Yashiro? You had to be there. But you weren't. You might think you're that person for me, that person I could find my safe place at, but the truth is that you've never been there for me when I needed you most and you couldn't have, but I can't forget it anyway and neither can you."

"Just let me fix things again." I begged. "Please! I just wish... I just wish this had never happened."

Something in him shifted. Suddenly, his demenour was calm and his eyes lost the fire. "Then let's forget about it."

"What?"

"Let's forget about it all."

"How can we? How can I forget what I've done, how can I forget what you've done?" my eyes filled with tears. "How can we both forget what we haven't done?"

"We can forget," Hanako said slowly. "We can forget, if you want. But we can only forget everything."

".... Everything?"

"Yashiro Nene." He looked at me. Just looked at me, and suddenly it was like he could finally see me. "Do you want...

To make a wish?"
