A/N: In this AU Giyu was with Kanae on the same mission when she died. Shinobu was also present as a helper. She was not a Hashira at the time.
Author POV (ft. Shinobu):
The death of Kocho Kanae was Shinobu's biggest regret, ever.
Shinobu remembered a dark memory of a younger her, holding her own sister's body which was dark red and bloody.
She remembered her own tears soaking Kanae's haori, the wet teardrops mixing with the dark blood.
She remembered the other pillar whom had been there.
Giyu Tomioka.
Now he was her colleague. Both pillars, of the same title.
He couldn't save Kanae then.
All of Shinobu's regret, rage, tears and sadness were too much for the fragile girl, so instead of burdening herself she directed it all at the one other person to blame.
It was Giyu's fault Kanae died. He was a pillar- he could have saved her, or at least killed Douma.
But instead Shinobu's memory served her right. She remembered shrieking and sobbing as Kanae's eyes dulled and the ocean-blue eyes that had bored into her skull. She knew he was staring at her. He stood a few feet away. Not moving to comfort her. Not calling for help. Not trying to revive Kanae. Not crying. Just looking.
At that moment Shinobu pledged to live for revenge on all demonkind, Douma and Muzan Kibutsuji.
She also pledged to hate Giyu Tomioka for the rest of her life.
Author POV (ft. Giyu):
Another day of living.
Another day of living without Tsutako.
Giyu had lost his sister years and years ago, yet everyday he woke up feeling the pain fresh.
He often wondered what life would have been like if Tsutako hadn't died, and happily married and lived a peaceful life.
Or if he hadn't been such a burden. Tsutako died protecting him. It was his fault.
Well, his fault and Kocho Shinobu's fault.
Kanae, Shinobu's older sister, had been present at Tsutako's wedding at the time since Kanae had been one of Tsutako's closest friends.
Shinobu had tagged along. She was a small child, no older than Giyu himself. He remembered Shinobu's pretty kimono and irritated face.
Then suddenly, the demon rampage. Giyu screaming, frozen to the ground, watching wide-eyed as Tsutako in her beautiful wedding dress run to him.
Then he saw Tsutako trip over a little girl- Shinobu- just as she stepped in front of him, protecting him and as she fell, she mouthed the words- RUN- frantically.
The rest was tears and bloodshed.
The demon pouncing on the fallen Tsutako.
The little girl scampering away, escaping the danger that had caused Tsutako's downfall.
Giyu felt that undirected rage at the little girl as he ran as fast as his legs could go.
Now Shinobu, a grown woman, was Giyu's enemy.
Author POV:
Both pillars blamed each other for their sister's deaths. Mutual hate directed at each other, every single day.
It was human's nature. It was much easier to blame someone else, put the hate, sadness and rage on someone else.
Of course, both felt guilty and regretful. But since there was no-one else left to hate but themselves and each other, it was how things were.
