Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Inosuke heard those two voices before they saw them.
As they peered down the aisle, they spotted both the Flame Hashira and the Wind Hashira's Tsuguko just chilling and enjoying some bento together.
They were both shouting "UMAI!", y/n actually crying it, while Shiori watched the two of them with an amused expression.
She spotted the Kamaboko Squad and perked up, "Oh! The three of you are here! I was beginning to think you wouldn't make it."
"Hello, Shiori-san!" Tanjiro greeted.
"Aye, aye, aye, don't call me that you sweet bean." Shiori hummed, waving a paw, "Shiori is just fine! Come, come, sit!"
The trio wandered over, watching warily as the two Demon Slayers chimed UMAI over and over again.
There were boxes of empty bento boxes around the two of them as they ate.
"Hey, Tempura Top!" Shiori said as Rengoku and y/n kept on eating, "Ugh, these two..."
"Ah, excuse me..." Tanjiro began hesitantly, unsure of what else to say.
"Oh! Tanjiro!" y/n exclaimed, lifting her mask a little more so her e/c eyes were visible, "Zenitsu and Inosuke too!"
Tanjiro smiled, almost in relief, "Hah, hey there y/n, it's good to see you."
Y/n gave Zenitsu and Inosuke a sweet smile, "Hello you two. You're certainly looking and acting much better than the last time I saw you."
"Yep! My arms and legs are back to normal!" Zenitsu exclaimed, cheeks dusted with pink, "All better!"
Y/n chuckled, "I'm glad."
The golden eyed Demon Slayer's face went red and he practically dropped to the ground, rolling around screeching "Y/N-CHANNNN!!!"
"Inosuke, are you doing alright? Is your throat okay?" y/n asked, holding his hands in her's. Mitsuri would do it to her sometimes, and she liked it.
Maybe Inosuke was a bit different, but hey!
Who knows?
Gentle enough not to be uncomfy.
Firm enough not to make the nerves go ballistic.
Inosuke was about to go on a rant about he was the great Inosuke and of course he was fine but he saw the gentleness in y/n's eyes.
All of a sudden, the boy became all too aware of how y/n's hands held his and how soft her expression was.
"I'm-" Inosuke's voice was uncharacteristically soft, startling both Zenitsu and Tanjiro.
The duo flinched when they saw the flowery aura around the usually menacing Boar Boy.
"I'm fine." he stated.
"Heh, that's good!" y/n chirped then glanced at Rengoku, "Kyo- I mean Rengoku-san. Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Inosuke are here."
Rengoku smiled, "Ah! The kid who carries around his demon sister!"
"He has a name..." y/n murmured.
After the trio introduced themselves, Rengoku pat the spot next to him, "Come, sit here."
While Tanjiro plopped down next to the Flame Hashira, placing Nezuko's box on the seat in front of them, Shiori chilled in y/n's original seat. The cat curled up to take a nap, clearly not thinking of moving.
Inosuke grabbed and dragged y/n over to the seat next to Rengoku and Tanjiro's with a, "Here! Sit here!"
"O-Okay..."
Y/n sat next Inosuke while Zenitsu across from them just to get the Boar Boy to behave, though he didn't seem to have much of a problem with being responsible around the masked Demon Slayer.
Every now and then, y/n had to grab him by the shoulder and force him to sit down because of how he kept hanging half his damn body out the window.
"Inosuke, this is a train not a beast."
"Oh yeah? Let's bet on it!"
"It's not a beast, idiot!" Zenitsu shouted at the Boar Boy, "Quit hitting the glass!"
"Hm... if this really is a beast, then I'll have to give you food, every day, for a month." y/n decided.
She had his attention now.
"But if it isn't..." y/n thought about it for a moment before shrugging, "Meh, nothin happens."
"Eh??? Nothing happens!?" Zenitsu demanded, "You can't think of anything?"
Y/n shrugged, "I mean... not really..."
"Alright, deal! Only if you comb my hair again too!" Inosuke exclaimed, jumping to his feet, "I'll expose the true nature of this monster in disguise!"
"No, stay here." y/n said, holding up a bento box, "You guys should eat something." 'Comb his hair again? Please, no...'
"Woah...! Thanks, y/n!" Zenitsu breathed as y/n passed him a bento box, handing one to Inosuke too.
She only smiled, "No problem."
And with that, she lowered her mask over her face once more, "If you want seconds, we have plenty more bento available."
Y/n kinda just sat there and spaced out as the world moved around her.
In times like these, where she was unsure of what to say or do, she would think. Think of the Breathing Style she'd learned before Wind Breathing.
Watch the forms play out in her mind.
In case the day ever came where she was ever in a situation where she'd need to use it. Or possibly encounter her Master once more.
After all, he had made a promise.
"If we ever meet again... I doubt it'll be on good terms. We may even end up killing each other." he murmured.
Y/n blinked, "Ko-san..."
"But, you've done well. I'm... very proud of you. Continue to Master the techniques you've been taught. Get stronger." he continued before placing a hand on y/n's head, "So that the day we cross paths once more, you can show me just how powerful you've become."
Y/n tightened her grip on the blade she'd been given, tears gathering in her eyes behind her mask.
"...you remember what I told you, right?"
"Don't get hit. Don't let a demon see my face." y/n replied, voice barely above a whisper.
In that moment, she could've sworn that he'd smiled at her. Very, very briefly.
"Good..."
And without another word, he left.
He left and y/n as on her own again.
Y/n gripped the hilt of the sword at her side, imagining the light purple blade hidden in the scabbard.
She should practice more...
Y/n flinched when Inosuke lunged halfway out the window, both her and Zenitsu rushing to grab him before he could fly out.
"Inosuke!" y/n shouted, "Be careful!"
"Awesome, it's awesome! So fast!" Inosuke exclaimed, cackling, "Mp/n, c'mon! Let's go race to see who's faster!"
"No, that's dangerous you idiot!" Zenitsu screeched, "And don't put y/n in danger...!"
"Be careful." Rengoku spoke up, "A demon may show up soon."
Zenitsu froze, "Eh?"
Y/n finally managed to drag Inosuke back into his seat and practically had to sit on him to keep him still.
"Wait, so demons show up on the train?" Zenitsu questioned. (Why the heck was it Zenitsy)
"Sure do!" was the Flame Hashira's reply.
"WAIT A DAMN MINUTE, WE'RE NOT HEADING TO WHERE THE DEMONS ARE... WE'RE ALREADY HERE?!"
"Uh-huh!"
"Around forty people went missing along with a few Demon Slayers who were sent." y/n explained quietly.
"That's why y/n and I are here!" Rengoku finished, sending y/n a bright smile.
...
She almost cried.
"NOOOOOOOOO!!!!" Zenitsu shrieked, "I DON'T WANNA DIE, I'M GETTING OFF! RIGHT NOW, I'M LEAVING!!!"
Y/n was taken by surprise when Zenitsu prepared to drag her along with him but she stayed where she was and dragged him down so he was sitting in his seat.
Just then, the very pale conductor came strolling down the aisle with a, "May I... see your... tickets, please...?"
Creepy as hell.
"What's he doing?" Tanjiro questioned as y/n passed her ticket to the man, taking it back only after a hole was punched into it.
"The Conductor's checking our tickets and punching holes into them!" Rengoku explained.
Inosuke handed the Conductor his and took it back without starting a fight earning some much appreciated praise from y/n in addition to a headpat.
Zenitsu's ticket was checked next and then Tanjiro's. And as soon as forehead boy's ticket was checked...
The lights flickered out.
Then clicked back on!
And with the light came the nasty scent of a demon which Tanjiro caught first.
'What's this awful smell?' Tanjiro wondered, looking around.
The rather ashen looking Conductor merely uttered a soft, "Thank you very much..."
Y/n perked up jumping to her feet and resting her hand on her blade, "Kyo-san! The demon! It's near!"
Rengoku also stood, oh so dramatically. And gah dayum, he looked fine as hell while doing it as he turned to the entrance to the next car of the train.
The lights flickered a couple times again before going dark and flicking back on, revealing the ugliest mother🚚 I've ever seen in my life.
Zenitsu let out a terrified shriek at the sight of the hideous creature, grabbing y/n's shoulders and hiding behind her.
"There you are!" Rengoku exclaimed.
(let's see how long it takes to get you to-SLAPPED)
The big ass creature let out a roar.
♀️🐶
Anywho, ya'll already know Rengoku murked this thing and looked fine as hell while doing it.
So they yeeted on over to the next car where they evacuated some people and spotted another demon, unaware that the people in the car they'd originally been in disappeared along with the conductor.
Mm... somethin fishy is going on here.
Anywho, the next demon got its cheeks clapped with a nice lil Rising Scorching Sun and the thing wobbled around like a drunk before collapsing and turning to ash as all demons do.
As Rengoku sheathed his blade, Tanjiro stared at the sight in awe.
"That... that was amazing!" Tanjiro exclaimed, looking like a walking meme, "Please make me your Tsuguko!"
"Of course! You'll be a wonderful swordsman!" Rengoku declared.
"Me too, please!" Zenitsu chimed, OH GOD WHAT HAPPENED TO ZENITSU-
"ME THREE!" Inosuke shouted.
"I'll train all three of you!"
Hecking clowns, bro-
"Ah, Kyo-san..." y/n mumbled, looking a little embarrassed despite that hella scary mask of hers, "P-Please train me too!"
Mm, something ain't right here.
As they were all cheering and laughing, looking precious as hell, the lights flickered again.
Well would you look at that, it was all a dream.
They were asleep the entire time.
Tanjiro, the lucky little shit, was fast asleep with his head leaning on Rengoku's shoulder as the Flame Hashira snoozed away.
Y/n was between Zenitsu and Inosuke, the cheese headed little cutie sleeping with his head on y/n's lap while Inosuke's head was resting on y/n's shoulder.
Hehe, cuties.
Everyone on the train was asleep.
Except the conductor who was running along before collapsing onto his hands and knees.
"I put them to sleep just as you asked!" he said, eyes filled with tears, "Please allow me to be reunited with my wife and daughter! I'm begging you...! Please!"
Well shit.
"Sure." someone said simply before a hand with eyes on it was tossed into the ground.
It scrambled around until it was kinda standing with its fingers and oh god, it had a mouth-
"You did a good job." the hand to the crying Conductor, "Now... go to sleep."
The Conductor seemed to jerk like a dead fish having salt sprinkled on it before collapsing onto the floor.
"Have a nice dream where you can seen your family again."
"Excuse me." someone spoke up and the hand turned around to see who spoke.
There sat five rather sickly looking people, all of them ready to do some immoral shit.
"What do you want us to do?"
Well, damn, this shit isn't going to go very well, I can already tell!
~~~ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ•°*
Y/n awoke with a start.
She was staring up at a cloudy sky, snow gently falling down on her.
She looked to her right and spotted a log in the snow before looking at her clothes, recognizing the patterns of the kimono her mother had sewn for her years before.
Her mother...
Her mother died when she was thirteen.
Y/n sat up, eyes wide, "What???"
She knew this path... it was the path she'd usually take when she was heading home after finding new materials for carving statuettes.
Y/n began to hyperventilate, looking around with wide e/c eyes as soon as she realized she no longer wore her mask.
"Okay, okay breathe, just breathe-"
Y/n sat on the ground, breathing in and out rapidly, trying to calm herself.
Okay... she was no longer on the train.
She was home.
Y/n tensed when she heard the crunch of crisp snow as someone neared.
Oh, she recognized those footsteps.
"Shit, shit, shit-" she whisper-shouted, searching for something to cover her face with.
She spotted a scarf in her lap, the one that would always slip off whenever she managed to put it on by herself.
'Right, Mom always helped me put it on.' y/n realized, 'I tried to do it myself... but it would always fall off.'
"Nee-chaaaaaan!" someone shouted in the distance and y/n tensed, hurriedly scooping up her black scarf and messily wrapped it around her head so that only her ears, nose and mouth were visible.
She scrambled to her feet, dusting snow off of herself and picking up the log she had beside her. It was bigger than her, yes, but she was able to carry it easily.
Y/n inhaled deeply, exhaling a puff of air as the two pairs of footsteps she'd heard earlier finally stopped in front of her.
"Nee-chan! You're home!" one of them exclaimed, "Are you gonna teach us how to make really cool wood carvings now? You promised before you left, remember?"
"I wanna learn to make a cool mask just like the kitsune one you made last year!" the second voice chimed.
Y/n's voice caught in her throat.
Her brothers.
They were alive.
They were well.
They seemed so... happy.
Huh, their voices... they were the same as the day she last saw them. She wondered if they looked the same...
'Guess I'll never know. I'll start crying if I look.' y/n thought, still keeping quiet.
"Nee-chan? Hello???" one of her younger brothers questioned, she could tell which one it was simply because of his voice, "Are you gonna teach us or not?"
"Why are you wearing your scarf like that?" her youngest brother inquired.
"Did you try to put it on by yourself again? You always need Mom's help."
"I... erm... Ko-chan is helping me learn to use my other senses-" y/n blurted and almost facepalmed herself, 'I didn't meet Ko-chan until I was fourteen-!'
"Ko-chan? Who's that?"
"Nobody..." y/n murmured then began to usher the two boys along, "Let's just head home. You're hardly wearing anything, you'll get sick! I'll teach you guys to make masks tomorrow, okay?"
"Aw... but I wanted to learn today..."
"Nee-chan just got home! She's been gone for days! Let her rest first then she'll teach us!"
"Hm... okay then!"
As y/n walked with her younger brothers, she couldn't help but feel as if something was terribly wrong.
Wasn't she just on a train?
...what was a train?
She realized one of her brothers and paused and could feel him looking at him, "Nee-chan? Are you okay? You're acting a little weird"
Y/n blinked, about to reply with her usual lie about being fine but stopped.
'He told me not to lie about being fine-' she thought then frowned, 'Who are these people I keep thinking of? This Ko-chan person and the strange scary dude... the one who's hair reminds me of fire...'
Y/n merely smiled, "I'm fine. Let's go home you two. I'm practically starving."
"You're always hungry, Nee-chan..."
"That's cause I need food so I can continue being strong!" y/n laughed.
"So if we eat a lot, we'll be strong too?"
"Haha, maybe." y/n chuckled, unsure of what she was originally worrying about, 'Hm... it was probably nothing...'
But hadn't her family perished?
First her Father...
Then her Mother who died of her illness which y/n failed to fetch the herbs needed to treat it.
Then the oldest one out of her two brothers... and-
Y/n blinked when one of her brothers latched onto her hand, giving her a sweet smile with a, "We're glad you're back, Nee-chan!"
"Hey! Nii-san! I wanted to say that!" y/n's other brother whined.
She halted abruptly, startling both of the boys before pulling them into a tight hug.
They exchanged surprised looks before returning the embrace as y/n began to cry.
"D-Don't cry, Nee-chan, we're here!"
"You're such a crybaby. I'm gonna tell Mom."
They felt real.
This was reality then, wasn't it?
Maybe all that y/n was so sure that happened... was actually just a bad dream.
'Yeah...' y/n decided as the scarf slipped off her face, allowing her to see the two pairs of mint green eyes which stared back at her worriedly, 'A really long nightmare...'
She felt a sharp sting in her arm and noticed a bunch of scars littering her s/c skin.
Ah, wait a damn-
Y/n deadpanned, 'No. No, of course not. My mother is dead, this isn't real. It hurts, but I know this isn't real.'
Y/n stumbled away from her brothers, earning perplexed looks from them.
This wasn't reality at all!
