"Shiori, you're going to drown yourself."
Muffled curses came from the cat as a weary y/n allowed the feline to dunk her face into the bowl of soba y/n had been planning on eating after it cooled.
A day had passed since y/n's encounter with the Bald Demon(the Slasher) and she'd been informed that the injured woman would recover.
Much to her surprise, the woman had asked for her to come visit. She obliged and spent most of the day keeping the woman company before departing and meeting with Rengoku in a little noodle shop.
As Shiori finished up y/n's soba, the cat sat back, leaving the young lady to stare ruefully at her empty bowl with a quiet, "...oh."
"You said you couldn't eat it all!"
"I didn't say you could eat all of it."
Rengoku chuckled as y/n glowered at the cat, her face still too gentle to make her appear the least bit angry with the feline.
Y/n hadn't worn her mask all day, letting it hang at her side as she went about her business.
Though a couple of dudes stopped her a few times to compliment her on her stunning looks, y/n didn't have much of a reason to put the mask back on.
At least not until night fell.
Despite the fact that Rengoku could actually see her face, it was still quite hard to tell what she was feeling.
Emotions would briefly pop up in her eyes and it was as though she'd trained herself not to let her thoughts show through her facial expressions.
That was fine.
Y/n's face was still gorgeous.
"Thank you." Rengoku accidentally said aloud and y/n looked at him curiously.
"Hm? Did you say something Kyo-san?" she asked, e/c eyes briefly flashing with curiosity.
"Nope! You must be hearing things!"
"Possibly."
Shiori gave Rengoku a long side eye.
"The gas lighting is crazy."
Y/n observed Rengoku with that usual soft look of hers, smiling a little when he finished up his food with that heart-stopping, "Umai!"
She glanced outside as someone entered, noticing how it was getting dark.
She hummed quietly before retrieving her mask from where it hung at her side, slipping it on her face instead.
Y/n noticed Rengoku staring and gave him a thumbs up with a, "It's dark out."
"Oh, I see!" he definitely wasn't disappointed about y/n covering up her face yet again.
The person who had entered the little shop was another demon slayer, one y/n recalled seeing the night before.
"Flame Hashira, Y/n-san, I apologize for interrupting your meal." the newcomer hummed.
"It's fine! Come, have a seat!" Rengoku exclaimed as y/n scooted her seat to make space for the other Demon Slayer.
As the Demon Slayer sat down, beginning to chat with the Flame Hashira, y/n began to space out as she stared at her empty bowl.
She was really looking forward to eating that bowl of soba... but Shiori ate it.
"Thanks for letting me come with you, Papa...!" a much younger y/n chirped, beaming up at her Father before sighing wearily, "The babies are always crying and it's so stressful...!"
"You used to cry a lot when you were a baby." the man pointed out, dark red eyes glimmering with amusement.
"That doesn't count, you cried too."
"Only because you were crying! :((("
Y/n held her Father's hand tightly as they wandered through the snow covered village, having finished selling wood for the day.
They had plenty of daylight left before they had to head home but y/n's Father had suggested that they make a quick stop.
The tiny y/n obeyed when her Father instructed her to remain outside a little shop that held a strong scent of food.
It was a while before the man returned, the falling snow leaving white specks on his dark colored hair as he passed his young daughter a bowl filled with warm soba noodles and soup.
"Papa? What's this?"
The man only smiled sweetly, ruffling y/n's hair, "Just a little treat is all."
Y/n's e/c eyes rounded and sparkled a little, "Woahh...!!! Thank you, Papa!"
Y/n snapped back to reality when another bowl of soba was placed in front of, "?"
She glanced at the owner of the little shop who only smiled, "Enjoy."
The man poked Shiori who glared back at him, "And you, don't go stealing other people's food you little rascal."
"Oi! Her food is my food too!"
As Shiori started bickering with the shop owner, y/n lifted her mask a little and began to eat silently.
Her lips quirked up into a small smile and she ate a bit more eagerly as the warmth of the soup dropkicked the terrible memories in the back of her mind.
She didn't pay much mind to the conversation around her as she ate, remembering how her and her Father used to eat soba together once every few months after selling wood.
When her younger brothers were old enough to join them, they joined in too.
Y/n chuckled quietly, recalling how her Mother used to scold them for going out to eat when she'd already cooked dinner.
Y/n, her Father and her brothers would always eat the food cooked for them on an attempt to cheer up the disappointed woman(who would pointedly ignore them for the rest of the evening until y/n's Father started crying hysterically).
The h/c haired girl sighed, "Hah..."
She'd eaten all her soba.
Y/n only shrugged. She could return later and get some more another time.
The young lady looked at Shiori who was curled up on Rengoku's lap, purring in her sleep as she took a nap.
And if Shiori wanted some too, y/n could also buy some for the cat.
It was a couple more minutes before the three Demon Slayers left the shop.
"Will we be heading to the Mugen Train?" asked the newcomer who's name y/n still didn't know.
"We will. But first, let's take a look at the station where the conductor was killed." Rengoku replied, carrying the sleeping cat.
Y/n seemed startled, "Wha-?"
"You weren't listening, were you."
"...no, I wasn't. Sorry."
"There's no need to apologize, y/n-san-!"
"...I'm sorry..."
~~~ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ•°*
Inside that station sat a little girl holding a bean paste bun, a look on her face which you wouldn't see on nmost children her age.
She had dark brown hair tied into a braid and purple eyes along with round glasses.
She seemed troubled by something.
The heavy sigh she let out was enough proof of that. The girl, currently working as a bento vendor, was indeed troubled.
"Fuku, enough sulking. Go on and enjoy your bean paste bun." the little old lady, who looked like a way older version of the little girl, hummed.
"Okay..." the girl murmured, still looking down, "We didn't have many customers today..."
"I know I've said this before but it's far too dangerous to be going out at night now." the little old lady said gently as she read a book, "Tomorrow, you can help me during the afternoon. Since demons come out at night."
A distance away, y/n and the other demon slayer joined Rengoku after finishing their little investigation of the area.
"All clear!" chimed a crow as it flew over to land on the demon slayer's shoulder, the one with the dark blue haori.
"Hm, alright. Let's get-" Rengoku began.
"Demons don't exist!" someone shouted, gaining the attention of the trio.
Mainly y/n, as soon as she heard that 💩 she gripped the sleeve of her haori with a vice like grip to keep herself calm.
'Demons? Not real?' she thought, a blank expression on her face beneath her mask, 'The things that harmed my little brothers aren't real. This little-'
Rengoku, immediately noticing how upset y/n was because of this statement, placed a hand atop her head.
She glanced at him and the Flame Hashira gave her a warm little smile. No words were spoken but his message was obvious.
'Ah...' y/n relaxed, exhaling quietly.
They spotted the little girl called Fuku and her grandmother, the young girl looking up at the little old lady.
"Don't say nonsense like that." Fuku continued before looking at her hands which held the food just waiting to be eaten, "I have to sell as many bento as possible! It's already hard enough to Okaa-san being pregnant. On top of that, Otou-san's shop isn't doing very good."
"Leave the worrying to the adults." the little old lady told her granddaughter as she set down the book she'd been reading, "Until all this dies down, I'll handle the early mornings and nights on my own."
"But what if you get attacked by the Slasher too?" Fuku demanded, "What do we do then?"
"I would be more than happy to sacrifice myself for you!" the little old lady replied sweetly as the three demon slayers approached.
"Obaa-chan!" Fuku protested then paused, noticing the presence of two others.
She turned her head and let out a tiny squeak of surprise when she saw y/n's oni mask.
Painted eyes stared her down and the wooden mouth of the beast seemed to sneer at her.
Don't even get me started on Rengoku, the man is terrifying when he's standing over you.
Y/n knew this from experience, having tripped and fell over once while sparring with him.
When he tried to help her up, y/n got hecking startled and burst into tears.
Sanemi immediately assumed the worst and drop kicked the poor Flame Hashira.
But that's a story for another time.
"Good Evening!" he greeted with that adorable smile of his, "I'm looking for a demon, have you seen one recently?"
"EHHH!??? YOU'RE JUST GONNA ASK LIKE THAT!?" Side Character 01029 cried.
"KYOJURO-SAMA!!! YOU'RE BEING WAY TOO BLUNT!!!" The crow agreed.
"Shut your traps!" Shiori snapped from where she'd been sleeping on Side Character 01029's shoulder.
"He'll scare the kid!" the crow protested.
"Good! The brat needs to know anyways so her raggedy ass doesn't get murked!"
"Shiori!" the crow cried.
"Shut it, feather-brain!"
"The... the cat and the crow are talking..!" Fuku gasped, shocked.
"Yeah! And I'll beat your ass too if you say demons don't exist again!" Shiori hissed.
"But they-"
"WATCH YOUR WORDS, BRAT!"
"Shiori." y/n scolded the cat, "Be nice."
The little old lady seemed surprised to see Rengoku, staring at him with wide eyes.
"Hm? Ma'am? Is there anything you know?" Rengoku asked the old lady only for her snot-nosed granddaughter to stand up and block his view of her.
"Are you crazy or something? Demons don't exist!" Fuku snapped, shaking a little bit since Rengoku was so goddamn intimidating without even trying to be, "Stay away from us!"
Shiori let our a furious shriek and attempted to lunge at the child only for Side Character 01029 to grab her and pull her back.
"LEMME GO YOU SIDE CHARACTER!"
"SHIORI, CALM DOWN-"
The cat began clawing at the poor side character's face while the crow shouted for the cat to calm tf down already.
"Careful!" Rengoku warned the girl, looking a lil concerned, "If you keep shaking like that, you'll drop your bean paste bun!"
Ugh, such a sweet heart <3
"Stay away from me!" the little girl shouted and threw the bun, the food smacking Rengoku in the face.
The little old lady gasped.
Shiori began laughing like a maniac.
Side Character 01029 froze.
The crow almost fainted.
Y/n was silent, her mask still glaring.
All the sweet Flame Hashira did was take a bite out of the yummy weapon which had been thrown at his face.
"UMAI!!!"
"I don't believe demons exist!" Fuku said sharply, "They don't exist and you know it! Ah-"
The girl flinched y/n took a step forward and crouched so they were at equal level, "Tell me something..."
Fuku trembled at the sight of the painted mask glaring at her, the owner clearly in a bad mood.
"Was the rotten creature that hurt my brothers not a demon? If not a demon, what else could it be?" y/n asked in a low tone, her voice quiet and soft yet incredibly scary.
"It could've been a human or animal!"
"Do humans and animals regenerate in an instant?" y/n challenged, "Do humans and animals burn in the sun?"
"I..." Fuku was unsure of how to reply.
"Demons do exist. You're just lucky enough to have not encountered one a day in your life." y/n scoffed, standing up straight again and walking away with a, "Come on, Shiori."
"Hmph! Brat!" Shiori scoffed before leaping to y/n's shoulder instead.
As soon as y/n was out in the open night air, she squatted and hid her face in her hands despite her mask being on.
"Eh??? Y/n!?"
"Was I too mean, Shiori?"
"No! Not at all! The brat deserved it!"
"She's just a kid..."
"They've gotta learn eventually!"
"Hnnngh... I should go apologize..."
"NO! ONLY PUSSIES APOLOGIZE!!!"
