Kira sat in recovery Girl's office. The Dr she had been working with had been meeting her at UA instead of her having to come to her office.
Her name was Dr Peppy. She was a woman with a darker skin tone and curly burgundy hair. She was sweet enough and genuine, an old friend of Aizawa's from when he was working with an agency.
Her quirk was 'Scan' she could activate it and receive a ton of biological information from the subject she's looking at. It only worked on living things though. Humans, animals and plants. She could tell their ages, their genetics, and several other natural things. Including quirks.
She could also detect abnormalities in a persons body. Bacterias, disease and even cancers. All by looking at them for just a few minutes.
She could easily spot mutations and could figure out how a quirk worked biased on them. Like she could look at Bakugou and locate the chemicals in his sweat that causes his explosions. Look at Uraraka and locate the pads on her fingers that activated her quirk.
It was pretty interesting.
She had brought an intern as well. A skinny boy with curly red hair that was probably collage age. With big glasses he would always push up when he was interested in something.
"Hello again Kira!" Dr Peppy said when she walked in. Wearing a white Dr's coat with what appeared to be a literal rainbow tie-dyed shirt underneath.
"Sup." Kira said, sitting on the bed. Aizawa and All Might were also in the room. All Might because he was her legal guardian and Aizawa because he was the one who set all this up.
Kira had asked him to be there.
"This is my intern Si from the university or Musutafu. He'll be watching if you don't mind." The doctor said, sitting down on her chair.
"It's fine, Hi Si." Kira said, nodded at him.
"O-oh yes... H-hello!" The boy said nervously, pushing his glasses up. "Oh gosh people keep talking to me... I don't know what to say. Man I hope I don't screw this internship up."
"Alright, so after yesterday I ran a few blood tests. Looking to see if there's anything my quirk missed." The doctor started, she scanned Kira again and her thoughts were flooded with a ton of medical terms Kira didn't understand. "Oh, So please hand this paperwork to Her uncle." The doctor said, handing the shaky intern a clipboard.
"Yes ma'am!" Si said with a nod. He didn't seem to notice All Might put his hand out, because he handed the board right to Aizawa without much thought.
Kira covered her mouth before she could laugh at the poor boy.
"Oh um actually... I'm her uncle?" All might said, putting his hand up.
Si looked form him to Aizawa and Kira could see his embarrassment build. "Oh man I'm sorry!" He said, looking back at Kira. "It's just that... I mean... They just look so similar." He stammered to explain.
"Oh my God I think I insulted All Might! All might! I hate myself."
"That's alright!" All Might smiled, taking the clipboard that was handed to him. "I never really noticed it but he's right. Kira and Aizawa do look related."
"I am so sorry sir." Si bowed again. "He is so kind, and I am so dumb. I'm officially quitting. It can only get worse from here."
Kira sighed at the boys negativity. Wanting to say something to reassure him, but not finding the words or will to do so.
"Kid! What have I told you about over apologizing?" Dr Peppy asked, looking away from Kira to her intern. "Poor kid, too skittish for his own good."
"Yes ma'am! Sorry- I mean! My bad!" The poor boy stammered awkwardly.
"Anyways, in order to understand your quirk I looked into how people's brains function." Dr Peppy explained. "The entire science of it is hard for even me to comprehend, so I'm giving you a simple version of it."
Kira nodded. Thankful she wasn't going to get extremely technical.
"The brain is constantly producing Neural oscillation. Or rather "brain waves" when we think we send out almost untraceable signals. Your quirk allows you to pick those signals up and transfer them into data or words. Like a walkie-talkie picking up radio frequencies." The doctor explained.
All Might squinted in the corner of the room, trying to pay attention while also filling out paperwork.
"Humans also produce hormones that drive our emotions. You pick this up as well, basically when someone's brain sends signals to the rest of the brain or too the rest of the body YOU also pick it up." She said, before going back to the walkie-talkie metaphor.
"Like if two people are using a walkie-talkie on one radio frequency. Let's say it's the right side of someone's brain sends a signal to the left side of the brain via a 'walkie-talkie' someone else with a different one can accidentally pick up on their conversation by tapping and into the frequency it's operating on. That's your quirk."
"So it's like my brain just over hears signals sent through other people's bodies?" Kira asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Yes, and your brain transfers that information into thoughts just like the other persons brain does. You receive the same information they do, the only difference is you're a separate person." Dr Peppy nodded.
"What about people I can't read?" Kira asked.
"Well that depends on why you can't read them. My guess is that people with animal-like quirks when their genes mutated their brain function also because slightly different than a normal human. So they're operating on a separate frequency, one you don't have access to." She explained. "As for people with different types of thought processes I'm less sure. I guess if they don't think in words there just isn't anyway for you to transfer it into decipherable information."
"In simple but cruel words... You can't understand what's not there." She finished mentally.
"Okay. So I'm just a radio? Picking up a ton of channels all at once?" Kira asked, nodding to Herself.
"Yes. Obviously the closer you are to someone the easier it is to pick up on their brain waves." Dr Peppy continued. "My guess is the strongest frequency detectors or your "antenna" if you will... Are your ears. That's why covering them help. It's also possible that your eyes, nose and mouth also are weaker antenna."
"Lit." Kira said with a shrug. "You think there's any way to uh... Tune out? Switch frequencies and stuff?"
"Not that I know of yet, but it's entirely possible that one day you'll be able to learn how to gather more information with your quirk. Be able to pick up on pain signals and even someone's subconsciousness."
"Sounds cool." Kira said, but she was really more interested in turning the noise down.
"As far as "tuning out" I suggest you continue what you're doing. Blocking things out with headphones. Maybe try a thick jacket and see if your skin also picks up the information. That's all I can say for now though." She said, putting on her glasses.
Kira realized that she used those glasses to keep her own quirk deactivated.
"Alright." Kira nodded. "How do you think I'd be able to gather more information? Like you mentioned earlier about the subconscious and stuff." She asked.
"I'm not sure, the more contact you have with someone the better chance you'd have. Once again it's just a theory, but I've seen quirks like this before, not mind-reading but empathic and such." She explained. "Just think about the people you know, is there someone you can read better than others? If that's the case then figure out why."
Kira tried her best not to blush. If it was just her and this woman she'd probably mention what she found out with Katsuki.
But she was very aware that there were three men in the room. One was her UNCLE and the other was her teacher.
So she kept this to herself.
"I'll think about it." She said simply.
The woman galnced around for a second and looked back at Kira. "Not to be inappropriate but... Um... Intimacy might cause something like that. Make a person easier to read."
Kira did blush this time, looking away and nodding.
"But that won't be much help with hero work." The doctor finished. Standing up with a sigh. "Well that's all I have for now. I'll see you again later this month unless you notice any changes in your quirk."
"Yes ma'am." Kira nodded, still bashful over their last little interaction.
Mr Aizawa nodded.
"We'll keep in touch."
