32: 𝚂𝚙𝚘𝚛𝚝𝚜 𝚏𝚎𝚜𝚝𝚒𝚟𝚊𝚕
Two weeks until the sports festival. UA kept the whole campus open way later than usual so the students could use it's battle grounds and gyms to train.
Problem was Nova didn't really know how to train by herself. Unlike her classmates Nova hadn't ever trained her quirk or practiced fighting. She hadn't expected to get into UA high after all.
So Nova did the physical training she had been used to at Junshi. Which Included distance running with weights and exercises such as pull ups and pushups. Even hand to hand with the available sand bagas. All things she was taught at her previous school. But she felt stuck when it came to her quirk.
"I'm sorry, if I knew I would have offered to spar with you." Shoji mumbled next to Nova after she confessed to not knowing how to train for the festival.
Though it was a little too late now.
They sat in a corner table in the waiting rooms. Nova's stomach felt like it was in knots. The idea of the festival had been intimidating. But the reality of it was horrifying.
"It's fine..." Nova mumbled. "I feel sick..."
"Are you okay?" Shoji asked as the girl wrapped her arms around her legs and rested her head on her knees.
"... maybe I should drop out of the festival..." She whispered.
"Are you serious?" Shoji asked, frowning underneath his blue mask.
"I don't know... I feel like I'm too far in..." Nova sighed, looking up at him. "I'll be fine..."
"EVERYONE! GET YOUR GAME FACES ON! WE'RE ENTERING THE ARENA SOON!" Iida said, coming through the door.
"Yeah... Way too late..." Nova whispered again, biting her thumb nervously. Her nails were history at this point, leaving her to nibble unconsciously at the skin around them.
"Midoriya."
Nova glanced up from her knees as Todoroki's voice silenced the chattering of their classmates.
"Uh... Yeah what's up?" The green haired boy asked nervously.
"...From an objective standpoint... I think it's fairly clear that I'm stronger than you." The boy said with a cold look. Nova raised her eyebrows and everyone else stared in shock.
"Oh! Um... Yeah." Midoriya agreed nervously.
"However... You've got All Might in your corner helping you out." Todoroki continued.
Nova watched the two boys in confusion, All Might? Helping out Midoriya?
It did make sense... They had similar quirks, even Deku's original hero costume seemed to pay tribute to the pro.
But... Nova had always thought it was more of a one way connection. Like Midoriya was just a big fan of All Might. She didn't even think that the pro was playing favorites.
"I'm not here to pry about what's going on between the two of you." Todoroki stared Midoriya down with a look that made Nova shiver from across the room.
"But know that I will beat you."
Todoroki's last words hovered in the air after he said it. He said nothing else.
Midoriya said nothing in reply, even though he seemed like he wanted too.
After several tense moments Todoroki suddenly shifted his gaze with a tilt of his head. His eyes suddenly locking on Nova's own.
"That goes for you as well. Kurayami." He said coldly. Every muscle in Nova's body tensed in horror as his angry scowl landed on her.
"H-huh?" Nova squeaked out in surprise.
"I know that you've bested me once, that you scored the highest in the first test and that your father beat mine during his reign of terror. But know that these facts mean nothing." Todoroki stared into Nova's soul, his gaze as terrifying as her own. "Today I will beat you."
They stared at each other for a few more seconds until Nova hid her face in her arms, legs, and hair. "...Mkay." she whispered. Ducking from sight.
"Leave her alone." Shoji said with a glare.
"What's with all these declarations of war?" Denki asked in confusion.
"Yeah what's the big deal? Why are you picking fights all of the sudden?" Kirishima asked, putting a hand on Todoroki's shoulder.
Nova felt like crying. Keeping her head down weakly, they hadn't even started and she was already beat.
"We're not here to be each other's friends... Don't forget this isn't a team effort." He cast a glance at Shoji and Kirishima before walking away.
"Wait." Midoriya said suddenly. Causing Todoroki to stop and turn his head towards the boy.
"I don't know what's going on in your head... Or why you think you need to say what you have... Yeah, of course you're better than me. Infact you probably have more potential than the entire hero course... That's why you got in so easily." The green haired boy muttered. Nova peeked up, looking through her curls.
"Hey aren't you being a little harsh on yourself... And... Us?" Kirishima asked Midoriya.
"No. He's right you guys." Midoriya looked up at them. "All the other classes... They're coming for us with everything they've got. We're all gonna have to fight to stand out. And I'll be aiming for the top too."
He stood, looking determined and matching Todoroki's glare in a way Nova didn't have the courage too.
"You might be at me... But I'll make sure that you won't do it easily."
Todoroki stared at Midoriya before he finally responded.
"...fine."

The crowd was huge.
Far bigger than Nova's already huge expectations. Worst of all her class walked first. Mic was in a booth somewhere giving commentary. Shouting about their class most of all, how they were the ones who survived the villain attack.
Nova walked in behind Shoji. Using the boy like a human shield. There were so many people in the audience. So many huge cameras pointed at her and her class.
Nova glanced up at one of the screens, only to see the live video pan across her class. Landing on her and Shoji when it got to the end of their group. She saw her cloud of red hair, covering almost everything but her eyes. She yelped and jumped farther behind him, not knowing exactly where the camera was.
They stood in the middle of the arena. In a large field surrounded in all sides by the stands. Nova knew that no matter how she moved, they'd still be able to see her.
She shivered despite the heat of the sun blazing above them. The thought of so many eyes on her... So many people who probably knew her name, her father...
All watching her.
"I hope we're still able to give our best performance even though all thses eyes are watching us..." Iida noted walking beside Midoriya. "I suppose it's just another aspect to being a hero..."
Nova bit her lip. Iida didn't seem nervous at all. Or maybe he was just hiding it really well...
"Mic sure talked us up a lot.... Kinda makes me nervous, how about you man?" Kirishima said, walking next to Bakugou.
"Oh I'm not worried... Makes me want to win this thing even more." The boy replied with a smirk.
"Next up! They haven't gotten nearly as much screen time but this class is still full of talent! It's hero course class 1B!!!"
Nova glanced over, not missing the way the crowd ever so slightly calmed. She saw the other hero course class walk out to their right. The first person she noticed was that one boy.
With black and blue hair. The one she had seen leaving the class a few weeks ago. She'd seen him since then, almost always with his older brother.
Then she noticed another boy, staring at her in particular after marveling at the crowds. A boy with blue eyes and blonde hair who tilted his head when he saw her. Like he was observing some science project. Nova looked away nervously.
"NEXT UP GENERAL STUDIES CLASSES C, D AND E!!!"
Nova looked over there at the general studies students. Only to see most of them glaring daggers at her own class.
Right, according to Shoji they weren't that popular.
Nova swallowed thickly and she looked away, at Shoji's back as they walked forward. Waiting in the middle of the field for the festival to begin.
"Now the introductory speech!"
Nova looked up at the stage. It was Miss midnight. A pro hero teacher in a... Risky hero costume.
"Someone should talk to Miss midnight about what she's wearing..." Kirishima mumbled nervously. Looking away with flushed cheeks.
"That costume should come with a warning..."
"Is that really appropriate for a highschool game?"
"I like itttt~"
"Silence everyone! For the student pledge...." Midnight whipped around her... Prop. "Katsuki Bakugou!"
Nova raised her eyebrows and looked away. Bakugou? Oh... It was probably because he scored highest in the entrance exams. She glanced around at the nervous reactions from her classmates. They all seemed uneasy about this. Iida stiffened and the sighed, pushing up his glasses.
Nova glanced at him and then away. If she had to pick someone to do a student pledge... She would probably pick Iida.
"I just wanna say.... I'm gonna win."
Nova sighed. This was literally one of the worst possible scenarios. Now everyone hates Bakugou. And by association they also hated 1A.
Which means they all hated her even more.
Great.
