[NAME] found comfort in her mother's arms. She loved how soft her hands were, how loving her embrace was. It got her through sad times. Through dark times.

Dark times like this one.

A particularly large trash beast ransacked their little village. Cleaners got there and defeated the beast, but they were too late to save the village. Over half of them were killed, and the rest of them had nowhere to stay, as their homes were reduced to little more than rubble. Without anywhere to go, the Cleaners decided it would be best for them to go to Headquarters so they could figure out a living situation for them.

[NAME]'s sat on her knees, her fingers tracing over a straw doll that her mother made her. Her eyes were shut as they usually were. There was no need for her to open them. She couldn't see, anyways. It was quite dangerous, really, to be a blind person living in the Ground. But what could she do? She's lived this way her entire eight years of life. She got by with the guidance of her mother.

A soft hum escaped her lips, and her head raised slightly. Being blind did come with its perks. Her other senses were heightened. That's why she could tell that someone was looking at her.

The boy slouched where he stood, his eyes drooping. It was way past his bedtime. His team was sent out to defeat that trash beast, but with all of the left over refugees that needed tending to, the mission dragged on for much longer than it should have. He was exhausted.

As he stood there, his gaze rested absentmindedly on a girl who held a doll in her hands. She seemed to be just a bit younger than him. And her eyes were closed. He narrowed his eyes slightly and tilted his head.

What in the world was she doing?

"... Hey." The boy didn't respond. He simply looked at the girl with furrowed brows, wondering why she didn't open her eyes. "I know you're there. Where are you?"

He groaned quietly behind his pacifier and slouched even more.

If she wanted to know where he was, then why didn't she just open her eyes?

When he didn't respond for a second time, [NAME] slowly stood and walked forward with her hands outstretched. The boy, caught off guard, quickly took a step back. [NAME] didn't stop walking over, though. Eventually, he was backed into a wall, allowing her to feel his face. He hummed and wretched himself away from her touch.

"Oh, I'm sorry..." The girl mumbled, taking a hesitant step back, "I... uh... Who are you?"

The boy, unable to respond, simply huffed. [NAME] reached out again to touch his face, and this time, he didn't pull away. Despite his annoyance, he let her touch him.

"Dear! So this is where you ran off to." The voice belonged to an adult man, [NAME] recognized. She took a step back and held her hands close to her body. "Who is this, huh? Did you make a friend?"

The boy huffed, though his gaze didn't leave [NAME].

"Dear..." she mumbled, like she was testing the name on her tongue.

"[NAME], there you are!"

As if on cue, [NAME]'s mother approached from behind and picked her up. The girl immediately melted into the woman's touch. Dear watched curiously, but he didn't stay for long. He was tired. He wanted to go to bed. But, even as he walked off with his father, he couldn't get the image of [NAME] out of his head. The girl who wouldn't open her eyes.

Dear got used to [NAME]. He learned quickly that the reason she didn't open her eyes was because she was, in fact, blind. He'd let her trace her hands over his face to familiarize herself with him since she couldn't listen to his voice. He played with her. He stuck by her side. It made [NAME] feel less lonely, as the kids in her village didn't play with her very often.

But, as she got closer to Dear, she wasn't with her mother as much. Her mother's time wasn't taken up with taking care of her. So, her mother was allowed to do other things. She was able to go out to try and find a home for themselves while [NAME] played with Dear.

[NAME] didn't understand at first when her mother didn't return to Headquarters.

She thought that she was just taking a long time. That she might've gotten lost.

And honestly, she would've preferred that. She would've preferred to think that her mother was still out there somewhere.

But, with her impeccable hearing, she was able to listen to the whispers that circulated around her from the other refugees and Cleaners.

Her mother was dead.

Killed by a trash beast.

The moment [NAME] realized was the moment she felt guilty. She felt guilty for not being there by her mother's side. Maybe, if she hadn't drifted away, then her mother would still be here. Then she could still hold her in her arms and tell her that everything was okay.

Of course, Dear was very aware of what happened.

He sat silently next to [NAME] as she leaned against him, sobbing her eyes out. Her words were unintelligible and broken and muffled. He didn't look at her. He couldn't look at her.

They'd only known each other for a week or so, but that week felt like an eternity to Dear. He wasn't sure what made him so attached to her. But what he did know was that he hated to see her cry. Slowly, he brought his hand up to touch her hair. His movements were a bit awkward, but he tried to comfort her the best way he could.

And, as he did, he made a promise to himself. [NAME]'s mother wasn't around anymore to protect her, so he would be the one to do it. He'd protect his girl who wouldn't open her eyes.
