Sunday
Nene POV:
My first date with Kai.
In just a few hours.
I was so, so nervous. But still so excited. What did this mean for me? A fresh start. If I dated Kai then Chouka would be FURIOUS, plus I would get so popular! Just like Aoi!
I studied my wadrobe. There really wasn't much.. and there was no time to get something new. Oh no.
I pulled out two dresses- one pink with a frilly edge and summer skirt, the other green with bell-bottom sleeves and lace. Suddenly, I wished I had my friends to help me pick one.
After way too long of debating, I took both dressers and rushed downstairs to ask Mom. "Mom? Where are you?"
"Sorry, darling, I'm doing the wash. What is it?" She called from the laundry room.
"Can you help me pick a dress?"
"Sure, hon." She stuck her head out the doorway, but then the washing machine started beeping. "Oh, no. I'd better deal with this. Go and ask Kira, will you?"
"Oh, okay." I slumped, disappointed. I didn't want to ask Kira about anything, and she was already mollified enough that I was going on the date.
I went upstairs and knocked on me and Kira's door. "Kira? Help me pick a dress?"
Kira opened her door and eyed the two dresses in my hand suspiciously. "Mmm. The green one. The pink looks too childish and silly. I don't know if you can pull the green one off though."
"I might look like a nana in it." I looked at the green dress fearfully. "Or a country girl. For all I know, I might look like Anne of Green Gables."
"Oh, alright." Kira rolled her eyes and opened her door to let me in. "I'll let you borrow a dress."
"You have dresses?" I peeked in her wadrobe and was shocked to see she had a huge arrangement of beautiful clothes. She even had fancy shoes and nice handbags.
"Yeah. Mom took me shopping yesterday." Kira shrugged. "Let me find you one I'll let you borrow."
"Okay. Thanks." I sat down on her desk chair back-to-front as she rummaged through her (grossly oversized) wadrobe.
"Here. This one." Kira threw a black dress onto her bed and I rushed over to examine it.
"Oh, this looks really nice, but I don't know if it's... me." I sighed, studying it carefully. "The top wouldn't look flattering on me.. and black doesn't suit me. It also seems a little thin.. and sheer?"
"It'll be fine." Kira said stubbornly. "I don't have any other dresses I can afford to lend you."
"Oh, alright." I held it up to the sunlight. At least it was better than the green one.
I hurried into the bathroom to change. It felt a tiny bit tight on me but otherwise it fit nicely.
I went out of the bathroom and displayed the dress to Kira, the fashion expert. I studied myself in the mirror.
"I can't pull this off." I shook my head.
The slightly revealing top of the dress was unflattering on my flat-ish chest and the material was very thin. I would be freezing outside. Black made my hair seem lank and my skin haggard. My eyes didn't look so highlighted with the black overriding it's colour. The babydoll skirt was a little short on me and the tight sequined top felt restricting. But it was more stylish than my Anne dress.
"You look fine." Kira turned back to her computer, where she was scrolling through Facebook and looking at idols. "Kai won't care."
"He will." I fussed with my dress, tugging at the skirt and picking at the top. "I don't even have any jewerelly to go with the black. And my shoes! What hairstyle will I wear? I barely have anything black in my wadrobe."
"Just wear like a chunky silver pendant." Kira pointed at my cosmetic mirror. "You must have one. And wear summer sandals or something. Wear your hair out and curl it or something. Style it."
"I'll listen to you, then." I found my mom's old silver charm necklace and put it on, along with a heavy chain bracelet that once belonged to my grandma. I found some old sandals that were just a little tight. I brushed my hair and curled it with hot tongs.
"Should I wear makeup?" I frowned at my reflection. "I don't usually, but.."
"Hmm." Kira studied my face. "Maybe some mascara and lip gloss."
"I don't have mascara."
"You can borrow mine." she chucked me a tube of a black brush and inky stuff.
Kira helped me apply the mascara and rimmed my eyes in black. After I applied the pink lip gloss I looked like a punk rock star.
"Okay, you'll be late now." Kira pointed at my bedside clock. "Get going."
Something twinged at the back of my head. Why was Kira trying so hard to help me? How did she know when the date was?
But I pushed it aside and smiled at my new sister. "Thanks for the help!" I grabbed my white purse and raced out. "See you!"
"Have fun." Kira waved as I rushed out the door.
Somehow, her smile seemed more like a smirk.
