Nene POV:
"School was amazing!" Kira gushed as she bit into a cracker.
Me, Mom and Kira were sitting in the kitchen eating snack crackers after school. And Kira wouldn't stop swooning over school.
"It was so big! The whole campus! Wow!" Kira kept going. "And I made FIVE new friends today! The cafeteria food was also so good!"
"Glad to hear it, darling." Mom smiled and joked. "It wasn't cheap."
"I just want to go home," I muttered.
"What did you say?" Mom asked. "And eat a cracker, Nene."
"I want to go home." I said louder.
"This is home."
"No. I mean back to where we lived before," I blinked away tears. "The girls here are snobby and I miss my real friends."
"Isn't there anything here you like?"
An evil, unfaithful part of me whispered Kai but I blocked it out. "No. Nothing."
"Please try a little harder to be cooperative, Nene." Mom said sharply. I realised Kira was looking upset. "We're here for you sister. This is for her comfort. Once she decides she might want to live somewhere else, we can move back."
"What?" I growled. "So everything lies with Kira now? I wish you would just stop!" I shoved back my chair and got up. "Suddenly you magically conjure up a sister, make me move here, and tell me this.. fairy sister now controls my whole life?"
I stormed up to my room, making a point to slam the door.
Hanako POV:
The end of another school day. Another school day without Yashiro.
I could hear the bell ring and the students pour out of the classroom from the small bathroom window. There was the boy.... the crazy exorcist... the purple-haired girl.. glasses....
But no Yashiro.
The bathroom was dusty without her, and I was so, so lonely these days. The boy did his best to visit me when he could but he usually had to leave for his brother and sister.
Boy, I wish I had a sibling who wasn't constantly trying to ruin my life in one way or another.
Or maybe a sibling I hadn't murdered.
Oh well.
I wish Yashiro was here. She would help me clear out the thoughts crowding my head. So boring without her. Nothing to do...
I clicked on the mobile phone Kou had helped me get for Yashiro. I dialed her number, but it went to voice mail after a while. I sighed.
Nene POV:
My phone rings. I don't even bother to get out of bed to go check it. My body feels dead, dragged down by some invisible weight that I suspect is merely my loneliness.
The phone keeps ringing. But after the designated time it stops. My caller will have gone to voicemail now. Probably spam anyway.
I lay still on my bed, face-down, face smashed in my fluffy pillow. The familair smell of my blankets is comforting but it somehow doesn't feel as cozy as it did before when it sat in my old room- my real room.
Suddenly, my door opens. I forgot to lock it.
The voice I hear behind me is the one I want to hear least of all.
"Nene?"
"Please go away." I say, my voice muffled by my pillow. I sit up and turn to Kira, who is standing by my doorway. "I said, please leave me alone."
"I just need to talk about something with you." Kira comes in (UNINVITED) and closes the door behind her, making a point to shut it properly, unlike me, who always leaves it hanging. "It's about school."
"Oh, right. Perfect, beautiful haven-like school for you, am I right?" I said bitterly and clamber into a sitting position on my bed.
Kira sits on the floor after a few awkward moments of her standing and me sitting. I make a point not to invite her onto my bed or my beanbag chair.
"It's about Kai." Kira's sweet, innocent face turns dark.. and something else I'd never though I would see on her face. "Stay away from him."
"Kai? What?"
"You know. The boy sitting on your table today." Kira said with disguist. "I don't know how you got Hanae and her friends to sit with you, but you can have them. However, you can't have Kai. He's mine."
"What?"
"Stay away from him. Got it?" Kira glared at me. "I saw how you went goo-goo over him today. But he's mine. You stay away."
"He's not yours." I said crossly. "And I didn't go goo-goo over him."
"Oh, your eyes said it all." Kira lets out a harsh laugh that sounds more like a hyena trying to growl. "Kai's mine. We'll be dating sooner or later, so you'd better stay away before you ruin anythingf or me."
"What! You're too young!"
"You're one to talk. He's a second-year. He's fine."
"Why him?"
Kira grinned. "And I ask, why not? He's handsome. He's smart. He's tall. He's funny. He's popular. He can kiss. Or so they say."
"Oh my gosh, please stop." I close my eyes and let my head fall back onto my pillow. "I can't deal with this right now. I just... I need to clear my head."
"I don't care about your head." Kira says in a bored voice. "I care about you staying out of the way from Kai and me."
"Just leave."
So she left.
But she did slam the door.
