Kira POV:
"This is really good...." I tried to compliment the food, but didn't know who to refer to Nene's mom as. Who as she anyway? A random woman who just happened to want to take a girl in? "Um."
"You can call me Mom." the lady smiled tenderly. Nene was giving me a wierd look, but I chose to ignore it.
"Oh... okay." I smiled back, but I wasn't feeling it. My brain was still in a state of confusion. The doctors said it was just trauma. Sure it was. Would someone mind explaining this to me? Anyone? "The food's really good, Mom."
But I'll just play nice for now, until I can figure out things for myself.
"Yeah." Nene echoed, but she was barely eating her share. Her mouth had barely touched her chopsticks.
She was a strange girl.
Nene POV:
You know how everyone always says where family is, is where home is?
If that's true, someone please explain the ugly homesick feeling in my stomach.
I can't even eat my dinner. My stomach can't digest it. I know I should be hungry after such a long day but that horrible feeling in my gut is more than enough to fill me up.
I push back my plate and stand up. "Can I excuse myself for a minute? I need to make a phone call."
"Sit down and finish your dinner, Nene. You can do it after dinner."
"I need to do it now."
"Finish your vegetables first."
Nene knew there was no arguing with her mother when she had that hard edge in her voice. So relacuntately she sat back down and scarfed down her salad. Even the soggy cabbage, which she hated.
"May I excuse myself now?"
"You don't want dessert? It's meringue pie."
As much as the pie sounded tempting (all that delicious marshmallow goo and lemony filling!), Nene knew she wouldn't digest it. "Not today, Mom. Save me a piece?"
"It'll be your breakfast tommorow. Now go, if it's that important." Mom gave me an understanding smile.
I scurried off into my room, picking up my phone and calling Hanako's number. Kou had given him his old phone.
"Hanako-kun?" I said desperately into the phone.
"Hey, Yashiro!"
I almost cried with relief at the familair sound of his voice. "Hanako-kun!"
"How is the new house and your sister?"
"The house is great. Really big. My sister, Kira, she's pretty wierd. She... she's into creepy things. I think Tsuchigomori would like her."
"I think Tsukasa would too."
"Yeah."
A quiet silence followed. And then I couldn't hold in my tears anymore.
"Oh, Hanako-kun. I miss you so much. I miss you and Kou and Aoi and the apparitions and the mokke and Mitsuba and oh even Yako-chan!!" I sobbed into the phone. "I just want to go back. I don't fit in here. I don't fit in with my parents and Kira- she's such a goody little girl, Mom and Dad don't even need me anymore." The last part was a bit of an exaggeration.
"Don't think that way, Yashiro." Hanako said soothingly. "You've got a pretty, big house now and the sister you've always wanted. You always said Aoi was like the sister you never had, right? And when you start your new school next week, you will love it. You might even find some new apparitions! I don't think that Minamoto exorcist monster goes around there."
"Minamoto exorcist monster." I sniffed. "You mean Minamoto-kun?"
"Yeah, yeah. My point is, he won't be snuffing out innocent ghosts over in your area. So you might meet some new school apparitions. New friends!"
"New friends..." my red eyes started tearing up again. "But I don't want new friends. I want my old friends! I want my real friends. Not some nonexistent-future friends."
"They'll be existent-present friends soon. It'll be fine. Just make sure you don't cheat on me, okay?" Hanako teased.
"I would never!" Somehow, this made me start bawling my eyes out. "Oh, I just hate this. I even miss bathroom-cleaning duty!"
"I miss my cleaner, too. The bathroom's filthy without you." Hanako teased. "It's just a long-distance relationship, Yashiro. I think you're capable of not seeing me for a few weeks."
"But that's just it! I don't know if I am! I don't know anything anymore!" I cried. "All I've got here is my parents and a sister who had no chemistry with me. I want to go back."
"Oops, Kou's asking for you."
I heard some rustling on the other end and Kou's worried voice blasted into my ear. "SENPAI! ARE YOU OKAY OVER THERE?? *rustle* (whispering/shouting: shut up, Mitsuba. I'm talking to senpai. No, you can't talk to her yet.) HOW IS YOUR NEW SISTER?"
"Hi, Kou-kun." my eyes watered at his familair voice. "My new sister, Kira, is abnormal. Even more strange than Hanako."
"Well, isn't that an accomplishment!"
I laughed. "I just... I just wish I could go back. To everyone. I miss you guys."
"Aww. We miss you too. Aoi's distraught, Hanako's brooding in his bathroom everyday, and even Mitsuba misses you a little. But I'm sure you'll have a great life over there."
"I feel so lonely. The house is so big now... but so empty. Dad is always locked in his room doing work and Mom is just besotted with Kira, who likes the creepiest things. I don't have a friend here, except for Black Canyon, but he doesn't really count."
"You'll make friends at school! By the way, what school are you going to?"
"Takaoka High. A private school. I don't know anyone there."
"Aw, it'll be fine. You can make friends so easily!"
"Oh, but nobody will like me. My ugly legs! The girls there probably all have pretty skinny legs and they won't want to lower themselves to hang out with someone like me who has daikon legs."
"Don't say that about yourself! Hey, listen, if you could make friends with everyone back here, you can do it there. Aoi-chan's popular and has skinny legs, but you're best friends with her, right?"
"Well... right." I sniffed.
"I've got to go now. Dinner for onii-chan. When will you visit?"
"In 2 to 3 weeks, probably. Mom doesn't want me visiting too often."
"Aw. Well, call me later, okay? Bye!"
"Bye, Kou-kun." Kou hung up and I was left once again in an endless silence. I could hear Kira and Mom chatting downstairs.
I went to my closet. Tommorow was Sunday. Then, on Monday, I would start at Takaoka High. My uniform had arrived yesterday.
It had a dark purple blazer with a red-and-gold tie, along with a white blouse and matching purple pleated skirt. They also made it mandatory to wear knee-length white socks and chocolate-brown loafers. They also had pretty strict rules about hair and accesories (hair tied up, no jewerelly except for earrings, no dyed hair, no nail polish, only black glasses, no makeup).
It was so different Kamome Gakuen.
I forced myself to close my wadrobe and go on to do something productive. Catch up on the Takaoka textbooks? But I could do that tommorow with Mom. Feed Black Canyon? Yes. Feed Black Canyon.
A/N: If you had a hamster, what would you name it? Personally, if it were black, I would call it Sesame. If it were white, I would call it Meringue. Less.. tongue-tying than Black Canyon, see.
