Author POV:

While Nene was spending her stolen moments across the country with Kai, Hanako was finding it increasingly horrible without Nene at school; that is, until he met Renee.

Back at school, Hanako was wandering the empty hallways. All the students were gone- it was so late afterschool, most students would be at home helping their parents make dinner, Hanako thought miserably. Suddenly, without company, he felt a horrible pang of loneliness.

He wandered to the science room, deja vu flooding him as he remembered his memories there. His dreams to be an astronaut... the many hours he had spent in that lonely classroom.. the blood from his injuries that had dripped onto the floor.....

He opened the door. Sure enough, the classroom looked just as it did in his years of life.

But something looked different by the window, yes... was that... a person?

Hanako floated closer. It didn't matter, she wouldn't see him.

The girl was short, shorter than Hanako, and she had long, wispy bubblegum-pink hair. Her skin was tanned, with a pretty brown sheen, and her eyes were wide and crystal-blue. And, as Hanako quickly checked, her legs were quite slim. She wore cute pastel-colour-schemed sneakers and her eyes had a pernament curious & thoughtful look.

She wore that look as she gazed up at exactly where Hanako stood. Hanako stared back, even though he knew it must be a concidence.

"Hello." She said, making Hanako jump in fright. Her voice was clear and sweet like a bell, and suprisingly loud.

When Hanako didn't reply, she said serenly, "Isn't that the old school uniform? Are you a student?" She reached out, and her hand went through Hanako's arm. He gasped, jumping back.

"Don't be scared. I don't bite," the girl smiled. "You must be a ghost. I've met some. I'm Renee. What's your name?"

"M-me?" Hanako said.

"Who else?"

"I'm Hanako." he replied, still looking flabbergasted. "How can you see me? Y-your not supposed to be..."

"I've always been able to see ghosts." Renee said. "There are many in this school. Don't worry, I don't hurt them. Not that I would be able to. I can't touch them."

Hanako stared at her. Renee stared back.

Three weeks later

Nene and Kai were now quite properly a couple.

Well, at least Kai seemed to think they were. He went around telling anyone who would listen. Nene felt shameful. Every moment she spent with Kai, Hanako would pop back into her mind. He hadn't been calling her as often lately, and she kept worrying apparitions had some sort of secret way to tell what people were doing.

But Kai was so sweet to her, although he might be a little forceful at times. For instance, Nene had been eating out for lunch with him, and he kept insisting she should try the spicy crab salad when she had already told him she couldn't tolerate spice. She had really wanted the falafel, but Kai told the waitress to bring them two crab salads. Sure enough, Nene hadn't eaten so much as two bites of it.

Worse still, Nene and Kira weren't on speaking terms anymore. They acted like each other didn't exist.

Hanako was faring better. He loved Renee; she was the only comfort to him in the huge, lonely school where no-one could see him except for Renee. She was so sweet and funny, and always thought to bring a gift to him even when he couldn't touch it.

And two weeks into their friendship, she had confessed to Hanako that she liked him. When he tried to tell her they couldn't, he was a ghost, she deserved someone better, she only ignored him. She was so cutely determined that Hanako finally gave in.

Their time together after that was bliss for Hanako. Renee was like a breath of fresh air, especially after Kou stopped visiting him so much. Renee didn't make him feel like a child who had died. She made him feel like someone alive, someone who lived a normal life, someone with normal friends.

Even better, Renee shared Hanako's interest of astronomy. With her, when he talked about stars, he didn't feel a pit of longing and regret in his heart- instead, he felt completely at home as they discussed Pluto and Neptune's orbit, or the sun's ability to explode.

But soon, both Hanako and Nene's time of betrayal would come to an end.

Both had as good as forgotten about each other- they were too focused on their newfound comforts. Kai and Renee were like replacements to them. Both had been apart for so long that they had forgotten what it felt like to be in each other's presence.

But that all changed when one day Nene decided she had to visit Hanako, like she had promised, or he would get suspicious.

That turned out to be one of her biggest mistakes and regrets.
