It wasn't long before that fateful day of the Family Interview arrived. Y/n was happy to be able to dress up a little, but opted for something comfortable but appropriate for the interview.
Kilian was super excited the night before, so much so that he could hardly even sleep until y/n made him a cup of tea and sat with him on the couch.
Imagine Yuri's shock and misery when he finds his wife sleeping soundly on the couch, cradling little Kilian instead of Yuri! Ugh, the kid was doing this on purpose.
Two hours of preparation later, the Briar Family was walking onto Eden Academy's Campus together.
Kilian was clinging to y/n's clothing, staying close to her as he nervously eyed the other families around them.
This looked rather familiar.
An old memory came to mind, one from many years ago back when y/n was just a little six year old like him. Except... she wasn't the nervous one.
It'd been Achille who was looking around like a frightened rabbit, e/c eyes darting from person to person as he seemingly scanned the area for enemies.
They had attended a meeting with their Father to visit some friends, a meeting which y/n now knew had been a meeting with their Father a close business partner.
Y/n and Achille knew him then as Uncle Gram.
Achille, eleven at the time, was still as anxious about being around lots of people as ever. He constantly scanned the area for danger, and would freeze up whenever he had to speak with someone he wasn't familiar with.
Y/n typically spoke up for him until he recovered from his initial shock, but Kilian wasn't a socially awkward eleven year old boy. He was a six year old who had a pretty rough time during his last three years of life, and y/n was going to provide him the comfort he needed to stand up on his own!
Independence was important for children. You need to give them freedom to learn things themselves, but also provide aid and a shoulder to lean on when needed. Just a little nudge could go a long way!
'That's what the book said, at least.' y/n thought with a weary exhale before resting a hand on the boy's head.
He looked up at her with round grey eyes, and felt himself relax a little at the reassuring smile on his Aunt's face.
"There's no need to be nervous, Kil, everything will be fine." y/n assured him, "How about we do something to take your mind off of it?"
"Counting prime numbers!" Kilian declared before giving Yuri a sour look, "You can join if you want, I guess..."
"I-!" Yuri glowered at the little kid, "You don't have to sound so reluctant about it! So rude..."
As Kilian and y/n began to take turns listing prime numbers, the young woman's gaze flicked up to the windows in one of the buildings as her eyes narrowed.
There were people watching them, observing them as they made their way through the campus. Huh, so the Family Interview had already started in a way. That was fine, y/n understood.
She wasn't worried either.
Whatever tests they'd throw at them, they'd be sure to pass. Y/n's main priority was making sure that Kilian was as comfortable as possible.
"Hey, you stepped on my toe!" Yuri snapped.
"Maybe you should've kept walking ahead instead of trying to get in my Aunt's personal space, pervert!" Kilian retorted sharply, grabbing onto y/n's hand with a little scowl.
'Nevermind. I'll be sure to ask Laurence to look for a suitable teacher so Kil can learn at home.' y/n thought, shedding a single tear as her husband and nephew began to bicker.
Kilian had planned ahead, an illusion cloaking his and Yuri's fierce banter so that those who were observing them would only see a civilized family of three elegantly approaching their destinations with smiles and professional behavior.
He wanted to do his best, but he also didn't trust himself not to start fussing with Yuri, so illusions were the safest answer.
"Auntie, let's walk quickly to the interview!" Kilian exclaimed and y/n gave him a little look of surprise.
"You wanna get there quicker, huh?" y/n laughed.
"Mhm!" Kilian nodded eagerly, 'No, I just have very limited time before my illusions start dropping in quality.'
Cloaking moving objects with illusions was a little harder than an non-moving object, simply because he had to make constant changes to the environment around said object.
The concentration and power it required was very draining for the boy, so he'd rather not have to do it for too long.
In all honesty, Eden Academy was pretty impressive appearance wise. Kilian wondered if they had a huge library, or maybe a lab where he could blow stuff up!
The possibilities were endless, and he was super excited, but he had to get past that damned interview first.
'Oh, oh no, I'm gonna throw up...' Kilian covered his mouth with a hand, lightly swaying from side to side.
Y/n was a little surprised when Kilian tipped over, leaning against her with a plaintive little groan.
"Kil? Are you feeling alright? Is the crowd too much?"
"I'm... I'm gonna throw up..." he whispered, covering his mouth with a hand and earning a startled look from his Aunt, "Urgh..."
"Throw up?!" she demanded, alarmed, and Kilian's stomach lurched at the sudden increase in effort as he was forced to adjust his carefully painted illusion after he was scooped up by his Aunt, "Damn! Uh—I mean crap! We've gotta find a bathroom quickly!"
"No, it's..." Kilian stopped, covering his mouth with a sick look as his Aunt began to panic, 'Ugh, I wanna tell her that it's fine, but I'll actually throw up if I open my mouth again!'
As y/n was frantically looking around for a bathroom or anything, Yuri took notice of a commotion behind them, looking back with a curious expression.
Were those... cow bells?
Almost on cue, people started screeching like maniacs and running away in a panic as a heard of animals came charging through.
"What the hell?" y/n demanded, "Where'd all these animals come from anyways?! Who let them out?"
"We should move out of their path." Yuri advised, grasping y/n's shoulders and beginning to guide her away as the chaos approached, "Come on."
Kilian helplessly clung to his Aunt, too nauseous to say a word as they hurried along with the crowd to escape the animals. Unfortunately, there was so much chaos that nobody was getting anywhere.
Honestly, people were too busy shouting about how important they were to actually get anywhere!
Y/n was too busy checking on Kilian, and the boy was preoccupied with trying not to throw up on his Aunt, that neither of them noticed the horse charging towards them.
It wasn't until the last moment that y/n spotted it, the gears turning in her mind for a moment before she made a move to dart out the way only for Yuri to pop up and get 🚚ing trampled by the horse.
Kilian, not wanting y/n to get hit as well, conjured another illusion. One of something scary, he didn't know what, he didn't have the time nor energy to think.
"Holy 💩, Yuri!" y/n cried as the other animals veered around them, crouching beside her husband and setting Kilian down as she checked on the man, "Yuri, are you okay? Speak if you're not dead!"
Yuri really got trampled by that damn horse.
You could see an imprint of its hoof in his face, and he was bleeding pretty badly from the head, but he held up a thumbs up with a stoic look and a, "I'm perfectly fine!"
"Are you sure?" y/n inquired before her gaze turned to his arm, "Oh, oh your shoulder is definitely not okay, hold on."
As y/n gently asked what hurt, likely trying to tell if his arm was broken or dislocated, Kilian watched on in silence.
Yuri had thrown himself in that horse's path to protect him and y/n*probably just y/n*, even though the woman was perfectly capable of moving out the way in time.
He'd put himself in danger for his wife without a second thought, and that, Kilian could respect.
Yuri caught the boy staring, "What're you looking at?"
Kilian inhaled deeply before opening his mouth to thank the man. It was as the words were beginning to come out that he remembered that he was literally about to through up, but it was too late.
Yuri and y/n gawked as the little boy threw up all over the young man's clothing, horrified by the sight.
It was a good thirty seconds before Kilian finished throwing up, but he kept his eyes on the ground out of shame.
'I'm... I'm definitely not getting in now...'

Kilian was surprised, and somewhat mortified, when they somehow managed to make it to the actual Family Interview.
Yuri left to go have his injuries taken care of and recurve a change of clothes, while y/n helped dust both herself and Kilian off.
As she was brushing dirt out of the boy's snowy white hair, she noticed the downcast look on his face. He was clearly still horribly embarrassed about the fact he'd thrown up earlier.
His face was clean now, but he still refused to make any eye contact whatsoever. Ah, poor boy...
"Kilian."
Kilian looked up at the sound of his Aunt's voice and pouted when she cupped his face in her hands, "Ugh, Auntieee..."
"You don't need to be so embarrassed about what happened earlier." she assured him, "It happens to everyone sometimes, you know?"
"Did it happen to you?" Kilian asked quietly.
...
Y/n smiled and nodded, "It happened a couple times when I was younger, mostly when I ended up in a stressful situation."
Kilian pondered for a long moment.
"Huh."
After they were all tidied up, the two of them sat in the hall as they waited for their turn to be interviewed. Kilian was simultaneously hoping that Yuri would return before it was their turn.
The boy fidgeted as he sat there with a nervous look, and found himself looking to his Aunt. She didn't seem nervous at all.
There was a calm look upon her face, an almost intense look actually. Kilian instantly recognized it as the intense look of anxiousness which Achille once had, along with Kilian's grandfather.
That look which was so often mistaken for anger.
Pure. 🚚ing. Terror.
Kilian opted to look away, eyes moving to the floor.
Sighhhhh
