23: 𝑇ℎ𝑟𝑜𝑤𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑀𝑎𝑡𝑐ℎ𝑒𝑠

Bakugou ended up letting Kira sit in a dark room. Recovery girl gave her some headache medicine and lots of water.

The migraine had snuck up on her, she had been pretty fine during the obstacles race and most of the Calvary battle. Recovery girl said that she may have been too distracted, or she had been fueled by adrenaline the entire time and was now crashing.

Bakugo gave her something to eat and then left again to let her lay down alone. There was about an hour and a half before the rest of the tournament actually started, but there were still a lot of Mini games being played. Kira set up, her headache had just started to relent but he fear...

She couldn't rest until she talked to him.

Kira grabbed the bottle and left the quiet room. Putting on her headphones to try and cancel out all of the noise. She set them on noise blocking mode and didn't play any music. Walking through the halls in silence.

Of course it didn't completely stop her quirk. Nothing did, and that might not be such a bad thing. She had a feeling that she'd panic without it, it was always there and if it disappeared, it would be like losing your sight or hearing. Like an arm or a leg.

Sure she could adjust, but it would take awhile.

She walked to the railing and looked over the playing field. Students ran around with cards in their hands, trying to collect items and turn them in to win. Bakugou wasn't there, but a few other people from her class was. She bit her lip and eyed the exit.

Monoma glanced at his card, threw it into the ground and walked out. She walked down the halls trying to find the one that connected with that particular exit.

It took her awhile, but she found him. He was standing by a vending machine. Possibly in the middle of getting something. But he was clutching his head.

It still hurt, he used her quirk once an hour ago and he was still in pain because of it.

"Maybe I should see a nurse... No. She loves with this, it'll go away soon. I can bare it, plus there are kids far worse off taking up her time. I wonder where she is, she disappeared after the Calvary battle. I... I don't think anyone knows what her quirk was, I would have heard about it."

"You're right." Kira said, he turned slowly. Hand against his temple. "They don't. A few teachers do though."

"Eraserhead definitely does."
He thought, just just nodded and tossed him the tiny bottle of pills.

"Here, use these. They help... A little."

"I'm assuming..." He mumbled, cracking open a soda from the machine. "You're here to ask me not to tell."

"If it's not too much to ask." She said.

"How do you handle this? That was... That was so loud. So much..." He shook his head.
"Might as well ask right? I mean you'll hear me wondering about it."

"It's different for me. My quirk developed slowly. It wasn't this strong until I was almost a teenager. I had time to adjust and get used to the noise and the headaches. Not to mention how many people were around us." She shrugged. "You had to take it all at once. Without warning."

"I had warning actually... I mean you did try to stop me. I should have learned by now to find out what a quirk is before copying it." He said with a hum.

"I shouldn't have touched you though. I knew that if I did you would have used it." She looked at her hand.

"Hmm, maybe." He said, Monoma was not the type of person to reassure people when they take the blame. "It might be both of our faults." He took a pill and swallowed it with his drink.

"I can't say I regret it though. You know I think we're quite similar you and me."
He said. "Our quirks are both invasive by nature. Taking things that aren't our own. Though you have a lot more guilt from it than I do."

"Maybe." She shrugged.

"May I ask... Why? Why don't you want your quirk to be known?" He asked.

"Something happened when I was a kid. My quirk is highly sought after." Kira admitted. "It was like walking around with a million bucks at seven years old. Eventually someone was going to try and take it. My parents didn't want it to happen again."

"But you aren't seven anymore." Monoma pointed out. "How long are you planning on hiding this?"

"I don't... I don't know." She shook her head and turned to look out the window. "I always thought my parents would tell me when I was ready to be honest with the world..."

"But they won't?" He guessed. "They still want you to hide it?"

"They're dead." She bit her lip.

"Oh, so now you're not sure what they want you to do. You no longer have a guide so you're just using their previous instruction."
He said, putting a hand to his chin. "Even if it's outdated."

"Pretty much. I'll figure something out eventually. But 1A already has a target on it's back, I don't want to add to that by telling anyone I have one of the most wanted quirks in the world." She said with a frown.

"I guess that makes sense... Well Kira you can trust that my lips are sealed. Just as long as you promise not to tell anyone anything you know about me." He put a hand out. "Deal?"

Kira hesitated, staring at the hand.

"Oh don't think I'm stupid enough to do it again. I've learned my lesson, some quirks aren't to be copied." He said with a lazy smirk.

Kira copied it and grabbed his hand.

"Then you have a deal."

"You're Kokoa Kira right?"
Kira tilted her head slightly back to look at the boy who spoke. He stood behind her with his eyes half closed.

Hitoshi Shinso.

"Maybe." Kira said, crossing her arms. "Who's asking?" She asked though she already knew.

"Could us my quirk, but that would be a waste. As long as that monkey doesn't say anything my quirk will be my advantage."
"Your next opponent." He said.

"Hm." She hummed. "Nice."

"Right."
He kept walking.

'Not much of a talker huh?'

Kira's match was first. Leaving Bakugou to sit in the booth and sulk while his classmates chatted around him.

"Who's up first?" Uraraka asked Iida who sat stiffly watching the concrete slab the fighters are going to be on in just a few minutes.

"Erm... Kokoa and that one boy... Shinso I believe." He said nervously.

"Oh wow, I forgot she made it this far. Man, do you think she'll win?" Uraraka asked Innocently.

"I don't know..."

"Well I told her his quirk, I think she'll have a fighting chance as long as she doesn't talk to him." Ojiro pointed out.

"Yeah... Physically I'd say they're evenly matched. Plus she has a little more combat experience than him with training and all."
Kirishima's leg bounced up and down nervously.

Why did he want her to win so bad?

"Yeah thats true!"
Uraraka put her hands together with a smile.

"She won't win."

Everyone turned to Bakugou who sat on the very last row with his feet propped up and his arms crossed over his chest.

"That's not a very nice thing to say about your friend!" Mina said with a glare. "Or girlfriend."

"Yeah! Have some confidence in her man!"
Kirishima said with a frown.

Bakugou rolled his eyes.
"I mean... She's going to throw the match."
He explained. "She could win. But she won't."

"Really?! You think she'd do that?" Kirishima asked, raising his eyebrows.

Jirou scrunched up her nose
"Did she tell you that?!"

"Not exactly. But she told me she didn't want to do this anymore." Bakugou shrugged.

"Then why didn't she just say that when I dropped out? Midnight would have let her." Ojiro asked.

"I wouldn't let her." Bakugou said with a glare. "I told her it was fucking stupid."

"But you think she'll throw it anyways?"
Iida asked.

"Yeah, she'll throw the match because she knows I can't stop her from up here. What an ass." Bakugou rolled his eyes.

"Why would she throw the fight? Just because she doesn't want to do it anymore?"
Kirishima asked with a frown.

"Sounds dumb."
Denki said with a frown.

"It's not fucking dumb!" Bakugou snapped.

Denki flinched away. "Sorry!" He yelped.

"She... She only came this far in the first place to help me. But she can't anymore, so the pressure isn't worth it to her." He rolled his eyes. "If she thinks that this Shinso fuck deserves to win. She'll lose on purpose so that he can advance in her stead."

"Aw well that's nice... I guess." Uraraka said with an encouraging smile.

"Besides she fucking knows the farther she gets the more likely she is to lose and even get injured. Kira is willing to take risks, but only if they're worth it to her. And this just isn't." Bakugou shook his head. "Yeah she's gonna throw this. All she has to do is talk to him right?"

"Y-yeah. His quirk is brainwashing. If you answer him when he speaks to you he can make you do whatever he wants."
Ojiro shivered as he thought about it.
"Only getting hit or something can snap you out."

"Really?" Midoriya asked, writing something down in his notebook. "That's fascinating!"
"So all I have to do is keep my mouth shut and beat the shit out of him! Easy! But of have to win my first match first."

"For our first round is two of our most mysterious students!!!! Kira Kokoa who teamed up with Bakugou last round is from class 1-A! While Hitoshi Shinso on the other side is an underdog from class 1-C!"

Mic's voice blasted through the speakers and the crowd cheered on the two teenagers. The boy and girl were so remarkably similar. Messy hair, eye bags, pale and skinny body's. But there was one difference.

One would do anything to win and the other could care less.

"We don't know much about either so It's anyone's match!" Mic continued, building up suspense. The crowd started to quiet down and Kira looked over at the stands lazily.

Bakugou was glaring at her. He already knew she wasn't going to win.

But it wouldn't be fair for her to win. She didn't want this, she didn't even want to be here. All these students trying to prove themselves, putting their quirks and talents on display like a bunch of preformers.

Was this safe?

The whole world was watching this, villains, current and future could be studying them right now. Learning their quirks and their drawbacks, learning their weaknesses.

Like Shinso, after this his quirk would lose it's secrecy. His quirk was useless if people knew not to speak with him. Couldn't this effect his future as a pro?

But he was willing to put it all on the line. Just to be noticed.

He shouldn't have to do that. He shouldn't have to expose his weaknesses to a crowd and to cameras just to be given a chance he already deserves.
It wasn't fair.

"Alright are you ready?! MAKE SOME NOISE!!!" Mic screamed.

The crowd cheered.

Why were they cheering? Really, why do they want to see two highschoolers fight?
It was kinda fucked if you thought about it. This wasn't training to be heroes. It was training to be entertainers.

"Alright... Match starts in three... Two... ONE!!!"

the crowd silenced. Watching, waiting.

The two teens stared at each other. Shinso was trying to think of something to say to her to get a response. "So the monkey told you eh?" He asked. "They're classmates, maybe insulting him will cause some sort of reaction from him. I know she's friends with that Bakugou, I could roast him all day."

"So it's just a fist fight then?" He rolled up his sleeves. "How are you gonna fair without your guard dog here to protect you?" He asked her with a smirk.

Kira rolled her eyes. 'As though I've never heard that one before.'

She took a few steps forward but neither of them actually made a move to attack. He watched her carefully and she did the same.

"THE SUSPENSE IS KILLING ME!!"

Kira walked towards him with her arms crossed and he made no move to back awaym staring her down.

"Looks like Kokoa is going to make the first move!"

She stood an arms length away from him. He studied her, trying to anticipate any moves she might make. But she didn't try to attack him. She just looked at him for a moment, nodded to herself.

And bowed to her opponent.

"What the hell is she-"

"Do it. Show them what you can do Shinso."
She said, slowly standing up.

"What?" He asked, taking a step back. His quirk asking to be used now that he's gotten a response.

"I'm giving you the match. You deserve it more than I do. Prove to them that you don't need a flashy quirk. Do it."

"Is this a trick?!" His eyes widened. "No she looks... She looks serious. She means it?! She's just gonna let me use my quirk on her?"

"Thank you."
He said, bowing back to her. Hands clasped at his sides.

"You're welcome."
Everything went dark, she was barely able to see. It felt like she was a spectator, like she was watching someone else play a video game. She could see through her eyes but her body was no longer her own.

She wasn't fond of the feeling.

Her limps moved on their own. She turned around, turning her back on Shinso. And then just walked, she walked forward towards the white line. Ojiro had said the only thing he knew of that could break his control was something hitting her. Any sort of hard physical contact would snap his hold on her. But that wasn't going to happen, even if it did she'd just continue.

Then, her foot crossed the white line. A buzzer went off and she heard midnight yell something and everything came back.

She felt like she had been woken up from a dream. The crowd and Mic's commentary seemed to be much louder. Like she had just lifted her head out of the water and suddenly everything was clear.

"What?! Kokoa walked right out of bounds because of Shinso's brainwashing!!!! Wow! what a Quirk!"

Shinso's heart burst with happiness from the praise he got from his teacher, from the pros in the stands and from his fellow students. For the first time in his life no one was comparing him to a villain while talking about his quirk.

"You won't regret this!" He yelled to Kira. Rubbing his eyes on his sleeve. "I'll make it worth it!!!"

"You already have. Don't pressure yourself."
She said with a lazy smile.

"Should I apologize for what I said about her friends? It really was to just try and get her to talk but... I didn't even need to do it."

"Just do your best Shinso. You getting this far has already done a lot for us little guys."
She crossed her arms and smiled.

"Keep up the good work."
