Life of Syn

Chapter 3 - Killian

MarchingMan

As I lay down next to Maddy's bed, and let my heavy eyes close themselves. I feel like I need to be here by my sister to protect her. But I also need her to protect me emotionally. I need emotional stability. If I could have a break, that would be incredible. I let my vision fade to black and my consciousness drift into sleep.

I find myself dreaming about myself in an endless dark room. When I step I hear the moans I heard in the room with the fountain with a yellow water spreading across the floor, as if I am walking on water and my shoes are leaking yellow dye.

I keep walking until I see myself in front of me. But it isnt me. He is wearing a tuxedo, with his hair styled diferently than mine. His eyes are a piercing green, contrasting to my dull blue-gray ones. Even though this person may look like me, he isn't.

"Hello, young Killian." He says, with a bit of an english accent. I look at him without saying anything, assuming he will keep talking. "You awakened me today. I am Greed. One of the 7 deadly sins. I noticed today that you're a bit...troubled. I can take this away."

I don't want to listen to him, but I'm a bit interested. "What's the catch?" I say.

"Ah, quite smart, young one!" He says, smiling at me. "All I need is your body, along with your five best friends' bodys, along with your sister's."

My eyes widen with him saying this. What does he mean, he needs our bodys? I don't like this.

"Don't look shocked, young Killian. It's only an offer. Simply come to the fountain and put your blood into it. We shall be waiting!"

I wake up suddenly, breathing a bit hard. The sunlight is peeking through Maddy's window and through her light blue curtains. I rub my eyes and walk around her bed to look outside. Even though the leaves are starting to fall off of the trees and succumb to the cool, autumn air, the day is just as bold. I hear Maddy starting to wake up behind me, also rubbing her eyes.

"Good morning, Killian. How long have you been up?" She looks at me, her dirty blonde hair messy, with a bit hanging in front of her eyes.

"A few seconds." I smile at her and yawn. "What's on our agenda today?" I ask her.

"I'm going to make us all breakfast. Then I think me and you are going to go into the woods with Shilah." Shilah is our 8 year old great pyrenees. They are big, white dogs. I have heard of some of her breed killing whole herds of animals of prey, like sheep or goats. But Shilah would never hurt a fly. She's even dug up moles out of the ground to play with them, but never killed them.

"Where are we going to go?" I ask.

"We might go camping with the rest of our friends. We should see if Dad and Emma are okay with that." Emma is our step mom, and the mother of our 8 year old, twin siblings. The girl's name is Ava. The boy's name is Toby.

"You do it. I'm not" I say

Maddy scoffs. "But why?"

"Because you're making breakfast for them. I'm sure they will have some extended appreciation for you compared to me. All I would have on you at that point is I'm their oldest son."

Maddy nods her head. "Fair." She says. "I'll try. If we end up doing it, you'll have to share a tent with Dawn."

My face would have gotten red, if my face had a tendancy to blush more than it does. "Okay? Why is that?"

"Ran out tents." She says, standing up. "Guess you'll have to spend time with her. Alone. With nobody around you. Just time for you two to talk. Too bad."

I suddenly realize what she's doing. "Maddy. Seriously?" She smiles at me, almost not trying to hide it. "Why do you want to torture us?"

"If you just ask her out, it'll all be over. It won't be awkward anymore, and I'll stop. But I know you can't do it yourself, so I figured I'd help you out." She replies. I shake my head and walk to my bedroom to get ready.

I get a pair of jeans and a black hoodie to wear today. Then, I spike my hair up to my signature hair style. A bit spiked, but not too much.

I walk downstairs to greet my dad and Emma, standing at the entrance to out kitchen. It looks like Maddy is already making breakfast for us.

"Hey, Dad." I say. "Are the twins up yet?"

"Don't think so." He replies. "I think your sister is making breakfast for them anyway. Do you know what she's making?"

"Probably some kind of omelet. She talked about putting green onion and minced garlic in them a few days ago. Probably some seasoned bacon too. Whatever Emma taught her to make is probably her range. So nothing too fancy." I reply.

I sit at our island, and hear one of the twins' feet upstairs. Eventually, I hear both of their feet stomping to and down the stairs, their yells greeting our parents, then us. I hear Maddy let out a sharp exhale of happiness, glad to see them up.

"Killian! I had a dream last night!" Toby says.

"Really? What was it about?" I ask, not expecting to listen to his dream. Most stories from kids his age tend to be a bit misshapen.

As he begins to talk. I think about my sister, and all we have been through. She doesn't remember our parents ever arguing, and neither do I. Bu t it hurt both of us to see our mother the way she was. She was never a very good person. We have a half brother and a half sister by her, but they both have different fathers, than both each other and us. Seeing her break up and start dating people makes us both terrified that Dad and Emma will break up. This is the only stable form of family we have. If it gets taken away from us, we will go mad.

Maddy puts a plate with seasoned bacon and an omelet in front of me, with a cup of iced coffee. Pretty much what I expected. "Thanks, Maddy." I say. The omelet is, actually, delicious. The bacon even has some vanilla on it, which sounds bad, but is awesome. My dad sits beside me, and puts the twins on his lap, and we all start eating.

"Maddy. Still want to go camping?" I ask her, making sure my dad can hear.

"You guys want to go camping?" My dad says. I see the anger in my sister's eyes, and can't help but laugh at it. "I guess that's all right. Don't burn the forest down." He says.

Me and Maddy both finish our food, and go upstairs to change into clothes to wear outside. Once we are done, we start to drive to Matt's.

We get there and realize he forget to tell Matt what we were doing. "Killian!" Maddy yells at me.

"I thought you told him!" I reply.

"Your his best friend!" She says.

"You are dating him!" I shoot back.

Matt laughs at our bickering and opens his mouth to speak. "It's fine. You guys can hang out inside while I get ready. I'll tell everyone else too."

We go inside of his house, and sits beside each other on his couch. The last time I was in here was when I was only about 9. Maddy didn't even know Matt yet.

"So...any plans when we go camping, Maddy?" I say.

"Just wanna make sure you and Dawn talk!" She says in a bubbly manner.

"Maddy...." I groan. "I don't wanna do that."

"But you need a girlfriend! You are super lonely, I can feel it!" I can tell by her tone that she isnt kidding. She's serious.

"I..." I try to speak, but don't know what to say. "Why are you so concerned?" I realise this is a stupid question soon after saying it. She is concerned about everything.

"Because you're my brother! You need a sibling like me! Without it, you aren't confident, and you...I dont know...act different! You have obviously false confidence!"

I don't know how she knows what I would be like with out her. Almost like she saw a dimension where she didnt exist as my sister. Where I didn't have someone like her to rely on. And, she's right. I do need her to help me. I need someone to help me, at least.

"Umm...fine. I'll see what I can do." I say, as if snapping back to "reality" suddenly from a long departure from it.

Maddy smiles at me. "Y-you can...you'll try to date her!" He says, excitedly.

"Yep. I guess. Only because you made me though."

"No, because you love her!"

"No, it isnt like that! Not right now, at least."

Matt steps out of his bedroom with a small backpack and a bottle of water.

"Sure that's enough, Matt?" I say. He rolls my eyes as if I had made a sarcastic comment.

"Yeah. It's just enough, and no more." He says.

We get into my car and drive to my house. We set up two tents in my backward, and Matt starts to collect firewood. I hear the familiar sound of the gravel crunching, only to see Dawn's emerald colored car. She steps out, and I only smile at her. Awkwardly. "Maddy, I changed my mind. I can't do this!" I whisper.

"Just do it!" She says, smiling at me. "How do you think me and Matt got together? He didnt cower away from me! He talked to me every day!"

She's right. They did do that. And Dawn isn't the kind of person that would initiate that kind of relationship. "Fine. I'll do it."

Maddisyn smiles at me, only to have her eyes widen at something. Something standing directly behind me.
