39: 𝙲𝚑𝚎𝚎𝚛𝚕𝚎𝚊𝚍𝚒𝚗𝚐
"I'm so sorry you didn't make it..." Nova said to Shoji.
The calvary battle was over, and they were taking an hour long break before the final rounds. A tournament.
Nova still had no idea who'd she be facing. She hoped it wasn't anyone she knew. She didn't want to hurt them, but most of the students advancing were from her very own class. She just didn't want to give them any more reason to hate her.
"It's fine. I lost fair and square. You did very well in the Calvary battle. Your team owes their victory to you." Shoji said calmly. If he had been disappointed earlier, he seemed to have made peace with it already.
"Thanks... But I owe it to them too." Nova smiled a little. "It was actually... Pretty fun.." she said. Shoji glanced down at the girl, she looked happier than he seen her recently. He was glad for it, even though he didn't make it.
"How are you feeling for the tournament then?" He asked. She looked away, nervous again.
"I don't know... Fighting one on one... It's not really my thing you know? I don't really like... Hurting people or beating them at things." She admitted honestly.
"I guess that makes sense. You're a very kind hearted person Nova." Shoji said, looking down at her.
"You think so?-"
Nova was interrupted by Uraraka who ran up to her, panting. "Nova! Come on we're late!" The girl said.
"Late? For what? Are the rounds starting already?!" Nova asked in panic, standing up.
"No the cheer competition! Hurry we have to suit up!" Uraraka grabbed Nova's hand.
"Ch-cheer competition?" Nova asked. She hadn't heard anything about a cheer competition.
"Yeah! For the mini games! Momo and Jirou said they were told it was important! That we were supposed to have a cheer competition with the Americans!" Uraraka pulled Nova away from her and Shoji's table. Nova followed nervously.
"But I don't know how to cheer." Nova said nervously.
"Me neither! But I'm sure we'll think of something..." Uraraka said with a frown. "I can't believe we hadn't heard about this..."
"Me neither..." Nova frowned. It felt weird, but if Momo said they had too that must mean it was true. She was the class deputy, and she was super smart. She must know what she's doing...
"Let's go!"

"I'm sorry Nova... I didn't know it was a trick." Uraraka whined, wrapping her arms around herself.
"That's alright..." Nova said with a nervous laugh. Her and the other girls stood out on the field as other students ran around playing mini games. They were all wearing orange cheerleading uniforms. Which consisted of orange crop tops without sleeves and scandalously short skirts With small protective shorts underneath. It was completely unlike anything Nova had ever worn before.
But... She didn't exactly hate it.
She wasn't used to showing this much skin. Her thighs, stomach and shoulders were all exposed. The only downside to that was it was the first time she openly showed her tattoo at UA. Before this only the girls knew about it.
Momo dropped to her knees and Jirou covered her stomach with a red face.
"How come I always fall for his perverted little schemes?!" Momo whined. Apparently this has all been Mineta and Denki's idea. A plan that Momo fell for.
Nova looked around casually as other students ran around the field. They were holding cards and playing some sort of scavenger hunt game.
Nova stayed beside Uraraka as they tried their best to embrace the situation. Uraraka cheered for her classmates and Nova cautiously followed.
"Bird... bird... bird!"
Nova turned and saw a panting Kirishima run up to their group. He was holding a card and smiling nervously. "Hey you guys!" He said to Nova and Uraraka.
"Hi Kirishima! Are you still playing?" Uraraka tilted her head.
"Yeah!" He nodded and smiled at Nova. "Super manly tattoo Kurayami!"
Nova's face went red at the compliment and Kirishima sheepishly held up his card.
"I was looking for Tokoyami but I guess he's busy preparing for the tournament..." Kirishima said. Nova and Uraraka tilted their heads to look at his card.
Bird
"Can you uh... If you don't mind. Let me borrow you and your... Birds?" He asked with a bright smile. "I need to show Midnight something that matches my card! Apparently if you're in the top ten you get a prize!"
Uraraka snickered. "You were gonna ask Tokoyami?" She giggled.
"What? Is that offensive?" He nervously rubbed the back of his neck. "Not like I can catch a real bird..."
"I'll help." Nova said with a tiny smile.
"Thanks!" Kirishima grinned, his smile twice as bright as her own as he grabbed her hand and pulled her across the field.
Kirishima proudly presented Nova to Midnight, who was judging the competition. Midnight looked over Nova and then inspected the tattoo.
"A tattoo? Is this temporary?" She asked with a small frown. Nova's face went red.
"N-no ma'am." She admitted sheepishly.
"Huh... I'LL ALLOW IT!" She held up her small whip. She didn't seem to care about Nova having a tattoo as much as the young girl had expected. But then again Midnight didn't exactly adhere to traditional values.
"Your prize Kirishima!" She held out a simple button pin. With her face on it and the text "Miss midnight!" Across it. Basic hero merch.
"Heck yeah!" Kirishima said, taking the pin and then giving Nova a high-five. "Thanks Nova!"

After cheering her classmates on in the mini games, midnight gathered the students to the center again. Nova noticed how many students who had lost already weren't present. But there were still a few still on the field. Probably because they had been playing the extra games.
Nova stood with Uraraka again, she seemed to be very nervous. Her pom-poms shaking as she held them tightly.
"Alright 1-A-" Tenya herded his class into a group as usual. But he paused when he saw Uraraka and Nova.
"W-what is the meaning of this?!" He stammered. Staring at them in shock. His body seemed stiff.
"It's a long story." Uraraka giggled. Though it didn't make Iida relax. He stared at her, then at Nova who looked up at him sheepishly.
He didn't glare at her as he usually seemed to. But he wasn't smiling either. Nova could never place his looks, she could never tell what he was thinking. His stares made her nervous.
"...right..." He said in response to Uraraka. His sharp jaw clinched visibly as he stared at Nova. Who could feel a red blush creep up her neck towards her cheeks.
Then Iida seemed to snap out of whatever daze he had been under and abruptly walked away from them.
"Huh, he's in a weird mood." Uraraka said with a head tilt. "I think he's nervous, with his family watching and everything."
Nova bit her lip. She didn't want to tell Uraraka that Iida acted like that because he didn't like Nova... Because of what her father did to his own. Nova was a little worried...
If Uraraka found out Iida didn't like Nova... Would she stop liking her too? They were just now starting to kinda be friends.
Nova didn't want to mess that up.
"Gather around students! It's time for you to see who your opponents are!" Midnight announced, pulling Nova's attention away from Tenya Iida.
"Since Ojirou Mashirao and Nirengeki Shoda dropped out we have fighting in their place Tetsutestu Tetsutestu and Kubota Abal!" She continued to explain. Nova nodded, remembering that at the end of the calvary battle the two boys dropped out.... Something about not remembering how they got there, and honor. Nova had been a little too far away to hear their reasoning.
"Now! Gaze upon your opponents!"
Nova looked at the scream as a tournament ballot popped up. Their names being put beside each other with a clear path to the top. Nova scanned both sides for her name.
