Fading light

Chapter 9: The Shadow Strikes Back

Tr1013Ha0613

The stillness of the night shattered with a sudden scream that echoed through the forest. My heart skipped a beat as the sound twisted in the air, filled with terror. There was no time to waste. Without thought, I sprinted through the underbrush, pushing myself harder than I ever had. The dark, twisted branches reached for me like skeletal fingers, but I didn't stop.

As I neared the clearing, I saw them.

Dark, cloaked figures were circling a woman, their eyes glowing with an unnatural red hue. She was crouched on the ground, her back to them, trembling with fear. My breath caught in my throat. They weren't just attacking her; they were feeding on her fear, her pain.

A fire surged inside me, hotter than the cool night air, as I drew my dagger. My hands shook, but the fear was replaced by a fierce resolve. This wasn't just a fight for survival anymore. This was something personal.

I hurled myself forward, my feet pounding the earth beneath me. The first figure turned too late—his eyes widening as my dagger found its mark. The cold steel sunk into the back of his skull, and he crumpled into the ground, vanishing in a puff of shadowy smoke.

The others didn't hesitate. One rushed toward me, the sound of his feet slapping against the ground quick and heavy. His blade glinted in the moonlight, a wicked thing of dark obsidian. He swung it down with terrifying precision.

I twisted out of the way, the blade missing me by inches, the force of it slicing through the air. But I didn't have the luxury of just dodging. I was faster now, quicker.

I reached out with my free hand, tapping into the energy flowing within me. I called upon the power of the souls—their whispers, their strength. The moment I did, the shadows around me stirred, as if they recognized the force that was mine to command.

The second attacker staggered, caught off guard by the power that wrapped around me. He tried to bring his blade down again, but this time, I anticipated his movement. I grabbed his wrist, twisting it with a force that sent him sprawling to the ground. My dagger followed, cutting deep into his side.

He didn't vanish like the first figure had. Instead, he gasped, a sharp intake of air as he staggered back to his feet, clutching his wound. His eyes burned with fury, and I saw the fear in them. He wasn't just a shadow; there was something more, something human about him. But I couldn't let myself be distracted.

The air grew colder, thick with the scent of death. A new figure stepped into the clearing, much taller than the others, his cloak swirling around him like smoke. He stood still for a moment, assessing me, his eyes narrowing as he saw what I'd done to the others.

"Impressive," he said, his voice deep and smooth like the growl of distant thunder. "But your power is nothing compared to what's coming."

I didn't wait for him to make the first move. I lunged forward, dagger raised high, ready to strike, but he was faster. With a flick of his wrist, the shadows around him solidified into a wall, a barrier of dark energy that stopped me cold. The force of my strike bounced off it, sending a tremor through my arm.

He smiled, cruel and cold. "You still don't understand, do you? The shadows are not something you can control. They are a force of nature, and they belong to me."

I gritted my teeth, my fingers tight around my dagger. I wasn't going to let him intimidate me. Not now.

I focused, breathing deep, calling on the energy that connected me to the souls around me. The power thrummed within me, growing stronger, deeper. The shadows that surrounded me swirled and responded to my will. With a flick of my wrist, the very air around me twisted, bending to my command. A wall of shadows shot up, rising to meet the one he'd summoned.

The force of the two collided, sending a shockwave that rocked the ground beneath us. The man staggered but didn't fall. His eyes locked onto mine, a dark amusement flickering in them.

"You think you can fight this?" he taunted. "You're playing with fire, Kaya. And fire has a way of burning those who don't understand it."

I didn't have time to respond. He lunged forward, his speed a blur as his blade came down in a vicious arc. I barely managed to dodge, the tip grazing my side as I spun out of the way. The pain flared up, but I forced it aside. There was no room for weakness now.

I summoned the shadows again, this time calling on them more forcefully. I could feel the souls whispering to me, urging me forward. Their energy was powerful, and as I gathered it, it flowed through me, my body crackling with energy.

This time, I didn't just create a shield. I shaped the shadows into something more. They formed into a weapon—tendrils of dark energy that coiled around my arm like chains. With a shout, I sent them flying toward the man, the dark tendrils wrapping around his limbs, holding him in place.

He struggled against the shadowy binds, but they were too strong. His eyes widened in surprise.

"What... What have you done?" he growled.

I didn't waste a moment. With a swift motion, I drove my dagger into his chest, the blade sinking deep into his heart. His eyes flickered with recognition, and for a brief moment, there was something almost human in them.

Then, with a final, agonized scream, he disappeared into the shadows, his form dissipating like smoke in the wind.

The clearing was silent now. The woman, still trembling, slowly rose to her feet. Her eyes met mine, wide with awe and fear.

"Thank you," she whispered, her voice barely audible.

I didn't respond. I couldn't. My chest ached from the wound I'd taken, and the power I'd just used left me drained. But I didn't have time to rest. I could feel the darkness still lingering in the air—there was more to this attack, more to this night, than I understood.

I turned, looking back toward the village, knowing that this battle was only a small part of something much larger. And whatever was coming, I had to be ready.
