What kind of ways was she talking about? What "correctness" did she want to change to?
Irene gave a start as she listened, she somewhat understood what the other meant, but it seemed like she still felt a bit confused.
Lisa was still quietly waiting for her answer.
"How could it be too late? Other people like yourself would probably spend their entire lives just like that." She thought about it some more, seemingly floundered for a bit, so she emphasized it again, "Hmm, of course it's not too late."
This was a sentence that came purely from the bottom of her heart, no mind games involved.
Naturally, Lisa could hear that, she immediately lowered her head to capture Irene with a kiss. Her kiss was so intense.
"That's great. I've missed out on too many things from before, I'm always afraid that it'll be too late for myself."
As she spoke, she began leading Irene forward again, looking as if she was very happy. She didn't explain what she meant by those words at all.
Irene couldn't see through her.
Her impression of Lisa was always gentle and restrained. Rare were the times for Lisa to show her true feelings, but her performance tonight was entirely different... Was this some kind of omen?
Irene pressed against her temples, she felt a bit tired.
When she got home with Lisa, she went to bed very early to get some rest. But that night she didn't sleep peacefully at all.
Lisa wasn't sleeping deeply either, she was soon woken up by Irene, and she reached out to wrap an arm around her waist, "What's wrong? Insomnia?"
"A little, probably ate too much tonight."
Lisa let out a low chuckle, "The food outside isn't as good as what you make."
Irene made a "hmm" sound, agreeing as a matter of course. This was the only thing for which she was never humble.
Lisa was amused, she had been half asleep at first, but now her energy returned, she moved her hand to stroke at Irene's hair, "If you can't sleep, then why don't we talk a bit??"
"Talk about what?"
"Uh, let's talk about you then. You're so quiet usually, and you talk about yourself even less. You should speak a bit more sometimes too"
The only reason she rarely talked about herself was that a certain person had never bothered to ask.
Now since Lisa was asking, Irene had no reason to put on airs. She originally had lots of topics to talk about, about filming, about Karina, but she finally said just one thing.
"I've liked cooking since I was little, always thought that I wanted to be a chef when I grew up."
"And then?
"And then...it just turned into how things are now." Irene's answer was succinct and to the point, she then kicked at Lisa's foot, "Your turn."
"What?"
"Am I supposed to be the only one talking?"
Lisa was quiet for a while, she nuzzled at Irene's neck, "When I was younger, I really hated my dad, what I wanted to do the most was to run away from home. I also really disliked Seulgi and thought of lots of pranks to play on her, but in the end, I didn't do anything at all."
She heaved a light, light sigh, "I've been a good daughter, a good sister, for more than twenty five years."
"Maybe this is just who you really are."
"Wrong, I just don't have the guts, that's all." Lisa hugged her tighter from behind, as she murmured her name, "Irene, Irene, I'm actually a coward."
Irene's heart lurched.
Even if Lisa hadn't said so, she had already known long before.
Irene knew that Lisa didn't easily give out her true affections, so she also hid away her own heart as was expected, becoming able to succeed at everything, able to do anything, staying by the other's side for the sake of cutting through her hardships.
"It's all right, no matter when you turn back, you'll be in time to make it." Irene opened her mouth slightly, but she never ended up saying those words out loud.
Lisa didn't make another sound, she seemed to have fallen asleep already, but the hand that was wrapped around her didn't loosen its hold.
They fell asleep like this, holding each other, and the result was that neither of them slept well.
When they got up in the morning, both of their complexions looked terrible. It was a little better for Lisa, in any case, she was only going to work at the company. But Irene had quite a few scenes to film when she arrived on set. Her obvious dark circles were only covered up after the make-up artist set a heavy layer of powder on her face.
Irene listened as the director finished explaining the scenario, and she was just sitting there fiddling with the hairpin, and making an affectionate expression as required. Halfway through the act, for some reason, she suddenly thought of Lisa.
She thought of those words she'd said yesterday.
So that person... more or less had some real affections, right?
The corners of her mouth curled up slightly, then she suddenly came back to herself, and was horrified when she noticed that she had zoned out just now.
Yet, the director had already yelled "cut".
"Not bad, not bad, this take passed, prepare for the follow-up scene next."
The staff walked over one by one to move the props, yet, Irene stood in the same spot in a daze, she didn't quite understand what had happened. That scene just now had passed with only one take, it was quite a feat for someone like her with her god-awful acting. But, exactly what had she acted out?
During the free time during her break, Irene went over to watch the rerun with the director. Captured by the camera was wearing a white dress, beautiful face looking somewhat stern. Although she was turning around the hairpin in her hand, her gaze seemed to be unfocused. As she looked and looked, she seemed to think of who-knew-what, and her eyes suddenly softened, a sliver of a smile appearing on her lips.
Like a spring wind melting the snow.
"This part will be perfect when spliced into the memory sequence," The director patted her shoulder in satisfaction, "You did pretty well this time. Let's continue like this."
No, no, gotta take care and sort out her feelings.
When she was getting off work, she got a notice from the director. It said that filming had progressed past the halfway mark. Next month they would start filming on location. The site selected was the scenic spot in the neighboring city, the plan was to stay there for about a month or so.
Leaving Lisa at a time like this, was it a good or a bad thing? Perhaps Lisa truly had turned over a new leaf. Or maybe when she got back from the scenic attraction out of town, a certain someone would be strutting about town with a brand-new love in her arms.
Irene was a bit bothered. When she got home and talked it over with Lisa, she also expressed her sincere regrets, "Looks like I can only rely on ramen for sustenance for this month."
"There are plenty of decent restaurants outside." Irene listened and smiled.
Lisa patted her hand, "But there's no one to share a meal with me."
Irene couldn't even come up with an answer.
Lisa was making a fuss about wanting to eat a late-night meal again.
Irene had been getting addicted to cooking lately, and her hand was actually starting to itch a bit. So, she went into the kitchen to rustle up some handmade kimbap. The aroma wafted through the air after it had finished steaming.
She filled up a plate and took it into the study, where Lisa was flipping through some files. But they weren't company documents, but some renovation renderings instead.
"What, remodeling the place?" Irene took a few glances.
"Mmhmm, don't really like the current style." Lisa waved a hand towards her, "Give me some advice for reference."
"Got any special requests?"
Lisa picked up the chopsticks, she ate the food as she pondered seriously, "The ideal would be... looking like a home."
Irene snorted with a laugh, "That description is too abstract."
"Don't care about the other stuff, but the kitchen definitely needs to be completely remodeled. It'd be best if it's twice the size it is now. Then make it an open style, then all that kitchenware will fit." Lisa lifted her head to look at her.
As she spoke, she flipped out some name brand collections of kitchenware for Irene to look at.
Irene scanned everything through, it was all in a European style. Never mind the prices, just the number of appliances itself was shocking. This person couldn't really be planning on buying all of these, right?
Lisa's mouth talked about how exactly the kitchen was going to be remodeled, yet her smiling gaze remained fixed on Irene, as if using it to sketch out her heart bit by bit.
Irene could feel her heart clenching, she took a long time before saying, "So, Miss CEO is planning to open up a restaurant?"
"Then, are you willing to be the chef?" Lisa sighed.
That suggestion was really too much of a temptation, Irene found it absolutely impossible to open her mouth to refuse. So, she wrapped her arms around Lisa's waist, and reached up to kiss her.
"Have to see what the benefits are like first."
So, the remodeling plans were decided like this: the bedroom and study would basically be unchanged, the main focus was on the living room and kitchen. Everything was settled with the construction team too. The plan was for them to start their work after Irene's departure. Everything should be mostly finished by the time she gets back.
On the day of departure, she needed to meet up at the designated location early in the morning. So, Lisa helped Irene finish packing her luggage the previous night, getting all her changes of clothes and daily necessities ready for her. The next morning, she also got up early to drive her white Mercedez Wagon there.
Irene didn't have to worry about anything, on the way there, she still had to listen to Lisa nag incessantly, "It'll be winter soon, the weather is much colder in the mountains. Remember to put on extra clothes... Eat three meals a day on time, if anything happens, call me..."
Irene nodded and agreed to all of it.
She didn't have any demands for Lisa, she only hoped that when she returned after she'd finished filming, there wouldn't be any drama like catching her in bed with someone.
Mmhmm, especially in that house with the fancy kitchen.
There wasn't much traffic on the roads, and they quickly arrived at the meeting place. Irene waved goodbye to Lisa, and got out of the car with her luggage in tow. She had only walked a few steps before Lisa caught up with her, pulling off her scarf to wrap it around Irene's neck.
They were in public after all, a move like this was already much too intimate.
For someone who paid so much attention to appearances like Lisa, there was no way she was completely unaware of herself. But she did it so very naturally, just like the first time they'd met many years ago, when she had taken off her coat and draped it over Irene's body.
It was only some kind of habit.
But enough for another person to sink into the depths.
Irene stood in the same spot for a while, gently wound that scarf tighter around her neck. She felt as if the palms of her hands were warm, almost as if she was able to touch Lisa's own body heat. She did not dare to wish for a deep, abiding love; she simply wanted a bit of warm fondness, that's all.
Like a moth rushing towards the flame.
Like her walking towards Lisa.
