39. ALMOST CONFESSIONS.
Arjun ~
" Where have you been all day?" She asked, her eyes searching mine with a touch of suspicion, and that unexpected question sent my heart racing. There was no way I wanted to confess where I'd been, especially in this moment.
" Arjun?" She tried once again, shaking my hand, getting me to look at her.
" Work, Little Flower. Something had come up." I replied, choosing to conceal the truth with a lie.
" So your wife has just been discharged from the hospital and yet the first thing that comes to your mind is work? I am disappointed Ranaji." Her voice, although playful sent a shiver coursing through me.
I had almost lost her.
I had almost lost her because of Vani and Amar and they deserved all the treatment they were receiving at the moment. I personally ensured that. If I could beg for her life in front of god, I could also create havoc in the lives of people who tried to take my life away from me.
"Oh my God, what's gotten into you, Arjun?" She exclaimed, a look of concern crossing her face. "You're as pale as if you've seen a ghost or something! I was only teasing, relax," she reassured, taking my hand in hers and gently intertwining our fingers. With a step closer, she closed the gap between us.
" Come on. Siya, you cannot be roaming around like this when the doctors have specifically asked you to take complete rest for another week." Attempting to divert her attention, I moved closer, intending to scoop her into my arms. She took a few steps back with a playful look in her eyes, stopping me in my tracks. Her slender index finger came to rest gently on my chest, and in that moment, everything else faded into insignificance. The mere touch of her finger had such an extraordinary impact on me, one she couldn't possibly comprehend.
" You shouldn't be walking around like this without anyone with you Siya." Was all I could say when I found myself rooted right in front of her.
" Arjun, enough of this. If you keep talking about what I should and shouldn't do, I might just run far away from here." She declared, maintaining a poker face, but there was a flicker of that irresistibly cute pout playing on her lips.
As I gazed into her eyes, I felt a longing to bridge the gap between us. Here she was, right in front of me, looking at me the way she does and I couldn't even bring myself to kiss her out of the plain fear of breaking her.
This time, it was her who leaned towards me and I found myself instinctively pulling back. It wasn't a rejection, how could it be? I would rather cease to breathe than find myself capable of rejecting my wife but it was the right thing to do at the moment because if I as much as touch her, I feared that I would lose all my control with her.
A flicker of hurt passed through her face before she attempted to mask it with indifference but her voice gave it all away, if not her eyes.
" Oh, okay. So you won't even kiss me now." Her voice wavered and the second she tried to put some distance between us, I found my arms around her waist, pulling her into my chest as softly as I could.
" Let me go Ranaji."
" When have I ever, Little Flower?" I couldn't help but ask after placing feather kisses on her shoulders while she stood there, in my embrace, perhaps too exhausted to even try getting away.
" Why won't you kiss me then?" I heard her mumble against my arm which she had clutched and I couldn't fight off the smile that was breaking.
" You are hurt, Siya. You are still healing." I told her and she raised her eyes to look at me, this time, not even trying to hide her angry pout.
" I am not hurt Arjun. I am okay! You all have made such a big fuss over me! See, I am fine." She said and there was not enough sense of self-control to deny my wife for something I wanted more than she did for the second time.

Siya ~
The second Arjun's lips connected with mine, I found myself completely melting in his arms. His arms, still around my waist was all the comfort I needed at this moment.
Every time he kisses me, I feel like I am floating on the clouds and standing in the middle of the darkest tempest at the same time.
Never in my wildest of dreams had I imagined falling in love with this man who had almost literally manipulated me into marrying him but here we both were, merely weeks before our first wedding anniversary.
As I attempted to deepen our kiss, he found a moment to stop and then, just like that, scoop me into his arms while a gasp escaped me due to the suddenness of his action.
" Ranaji!" I exclaimed but laughed, throwing my legs in a wave of giddiness.
He carried me to our bedroom and placed me on the bed before handing me a glass of water and continued to look at me.
" Arjun, I can have a glass of water without going unsupervised. Go and change!" I rolled my eyes but he failed me grant me a response and I sighed, gulping the water down my throat.
" You do know how ridiculous this is? I mean, take a chill-pill Arjun." I imitated Anjali from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham with the hand gesture while he took the glass away from me.
" Ridiculous was when you were lying there on the hospital bed, not responding to any sort of treatment." Was all he said before walking into his closet, leaving me behind and I closed my eyes.
" Do I really matter to him this much?" I murmured to myself and a ghost of a smile appeared on my lips which forced me to find my husband's eyes while opening mine but he was still inside the closet.
And just like that, out of literally nowhere, I realised that it was my birthday in 3 days!
Wait, when was Arjun's birthday? How did it not come yet? Was he a vampire?
What on earth was wrong with me!? We had been married for almost a year and I didn't know my own husband's birthday!
This has to be a new record.
" I am so proud of you Siya." I muttered, sarcastically and even gave myself a pat on the back.
"Arjun," I murmured softly, almost unsure if my words had reached him. "I was wondering, when exactly is your birthday?"
To my surprise, his response wasn't immediate. Instead, a sly smirk played at the corners of his lips as he sauntered over, settling himself beside me without a word.
Arjun's playful smirk took a teasing turn as he flashed a mischievous grin. "My little detective," he taunted in a mocking tone, "you mean to tell me that after all this time, almost a year as my wife, you still have no idea about my birthday?"
I flustered. I was completely embarrassed and I averted my eyes away from him.
But I was also Siya, which meant that I had to say something and I had to say something now.
"Ah, Ranaji," I began, my words slipping out almost accidentally, "I've been a tad bit occupied, you see, from coming to hate you to now lo..." The confession hung in the air for a fleeting moment, before I abruptly halted, pressing my lips together in a sudden realisation. Heat surged to my cheeks when I saw a realisation of what I was about to say in his eyes and I immediately turned away, unable to meet his gaze, my embarrassment evident.
In the deafening silence that followed my unfinished confession, I could sense Arjun's gaze on me and my heart raced.
With a hesitant breath, I finally turned back to face him, my cheeks still flushed. "I mean... I was going to say something else entirely," I stammered, and with a nervous laugh said, "Just...a slip of tongue, you know?"
He leaned in, his expression feigning exaggerated curiosity. "So, from 'hate' to... what, my little Watson?" he teased, his voice infused with playful intrigue. "The plot thickens, doesn't it?" He finished, imitating Sherlock which sent my heart racing even more, again.
" S...Slip of tongue, as I said." I replied once again, attempting to hide my face with the duvet but there was no way he was letting this go that easily.
" Do you want me to finish that sentence for you, Little Flower?" He asked, now a smile on his lips instead and I shook my head in a rigorous no.
" Slip of tongue." I repeated for the third time, equally adamant.
" If you say so." He obviously mocked me and I decided to get up from the bed, somehow desperately trying to change the topic.
" I need air. You all cannot lock me in here. I am going to change and get dressed in something nice and then go to the Queen's Courtyard." I announced, trying to put some distance between myself and him.
" I am not leaving you alone Siya." He declared, his tone shifting from playful to earnest in an instant.
" You do know you cannot enter the courtyard unless I invite you, right?" I quipped, arching a brow in playful defiance as he rose from the bed.
" There are fifteen more courtyards in the Palace where you can get some air just fine." He asserted in finality.
" I have a better solution. I can just simply invite you. Besides, I am dying to sit on that swing and I can only do that when you make me!" I said, smiling with a hint of longing, momentarily swept away from my intention to avoid him.
" If that is what my Raanisa wants." He replied and I said yes before getting to the closet and changing.
I wanted to dress up and it was going to be a saree! After all, I had learnt how to drape it properly but as I glanced at the medical sling supporting my hand, I realised that it was not happening. There was no way I could manage the folds and pleats on my own. With a few annoyed words, I abandoned the idea along with the saree.
"Is this what you wish to wear?" Arjun's voice interrupted my thoughts, catching me off guard. I turned to find him standing there, a faint concern glinting in his eyes.
I nodded, offering a wistful smile, though disappointment lingered. "Yes, but..." I trailed off, gesturing helplessly to the sling.
His gaze followed my gesture, understanding dawning on his face. Without a word, he stepped closer and with a gentle touch, he held the saree out in his own hands.
" Umm...what do you think you're doing?" I asked, attempting to take it out of his hands but he sidestepped my grasp.
" I am sending in one of the maids to help you with your blouse and underskirt." He said without giving me a chance to protest and made his way out, back to the room and I followed him out.
" I'll just ask her to drape the saree for me Ranaji....." I tried to speak but be cut me off.
" Why Mrs. Siya Arjun Singh Rajvanshi? Would it send your heart racing if I drape this saree on you? Will you feel exposed in front of me while I familiarise myself with every curve you own? Or is it that you don't want me to find out how your body reacts to my touches when you so evidently try to hide from me it's response when I as much as brush my knuckles on your cheeks?" He asked, his eyes suddenly turning a shade darker as he started to walk towards me and with every word that left his lips, I felt heat rise on my cheeks and I flustered, my mind refusing to believe that he just said all these words to me.
" No." This was my natural response to everything he says and that's what unconsciously came out of my mouth.
" That settles this, then." I heard him faintly.
" I....you....what?" I stammered before I could even gather my thoughts and when I finally did, I found a maid standing in front of me.
She helped me before leaving and I stood there, in front of the mirror in my blouse and underskirt when Arjun, with the saree in his hand, walked to stand just behind me, holding my gaze through the mirror.
Slowly, he turned me around to face him and then started to wrap the saree around my waist, the back of his hand occasionally brushing my bare stomach, sending a million butterflies fluttering inside me, all while still looking me in the eye. As I felt his index finger slipping beneath the edge of my underskirt to tuck the fabric in, heat rose through my whole body and I shivered, my hand automatically clutching onto Ranaji's bicep tightly, closing my eyes.
" I do send your heart racing." His voice, a mere whisper near my right ear sent goosebumps all over me, forcing me to clutch his arm tighter and I heard him chuckle.
Gathering all my confidence once again, I opened my eyes, withdrawing my hand while he was done with the pleats and right there, bent down on a knee to tuck them in.
I sucked air in when his hands brushed my waist and a smirk formed on his lips as he stood back up.
" I am never wrong about you, Little Flower. Your reactions just talked to me and they had a lot to say." He spoke up, finally draping the loose end of my saree over my shoulder.
Now how do I tell him that it's not just my body which reacts to his proximity. It's my heart too that dances to the rhythm of his voice.
" There you go. All done." He said, turning me towards the mirror once again and I looked at myself all dressed and pretty, a smile drawing.
" Stunning." Was the only word he said and I looked at him, blushing for the thousandth time in the past hour.
He then made me sit in front of the dresser, made me wear bangles and filled my maang with sindoor and I adored myself.
I did look pretty!!
I was just playing for the sound of my bangles when I recalled that Arjun still hadn't told me his birthday!!
" Ranaji you still......" I started but he kept his index finger on my lips, laughing.
" 5th November." He said and my eyes widened in shock.
It dawned on me—it was our wedding anniversary!
" You married me on your birthday?" I stood up, looking at him.
" In no world could anyone celebrate me without celebrating you." He said these words and my heart, soul and mind surrenders irrevocably to him, without a doubt as I continued to look at him, completely unaware as to how to respond to this.
